I was just curious about a technique that read about making your own moss with the lint collected from your dryer. Has anyone ever used this technique and did it look real enough?

I was really simple. just collect the lint, and green paint and white glue and mix.

I am not sure how well it would hold up and how it would appear. If you're in a climate that has wet weather in October like me, the lint is likely to shrink and look bad. I am planning on using that fake moss in the stores on some columns I am building and just sprinkling it on to the drying paint. That moss is fairly cheap. Good Luck and post some pics if you go for the lint idea.

Hey, Magnusius, I used to live in Roy! On 4600 S when my hubby was at Hill. I live in Nebraska now.
I've seen the fake moss on props and it looks good. If you want to get a lot for free, go to the laundromat and ask them.
I've heard people with pets and carpets use vacuum bag lint/dirt, but I think that would be too gritty, even with pet hair.

Some of us are not so lucky to have much of a budget to build anything with. If there is a way for me to make something using what i can find for free, then why would i buy. When you are unemployed and just trying to afford food, then you have to look at things in a different and creative way.

(I dont want to sound angry, Its just that other things are more important to deal with right now but its really hard to stop trying to build stuff.)

I'm an unemployed college graduate, so I didn't mean anything by my comment...just didn't understand the reason for choosing one method over another, or just going with store bought.
I would assume that both real or fake homebrew methods last about as long, and cost about the same. But yeah, Dollar Tree has both artificial varieties.

I do remember another forum member making a variation of the lint moss for her fuzzy spider props.
I'll see if I can dig up the link. here ya go: http://www.halloweenforum.com/tutorials-step-step/78986-easy-spiders-2.html#post688552

Just as good as moss are those air plants. My mom died at Christmas, and I was in central Florida from Thanksgiving until two weeks ago, dealing with her stuff. Those air plants grew on her trees (Holly, Oak and Loquat, though I don't think the fruit had the air plants).
Those air plants are parasites, so take them off and sell them if you can! They'd be great on gravestones.
And yes, Utah is the absoulute best place for haunts (sorry, St. Louis and Orlando). This was my first Halloween in Nebraska and I was recovering from surgery, so no idea how the haunts are. I sure miss Utah.

Eyegore I will give you one reason as to "why" make something instead of buying even when it's fairly cheap to buy.

Some people get more sanctification in making things out of other things than buying. My neighbor can go into any store and buy the same things as I can but he will never get the sanctification of making something out of nothing as I do. I do understand your point of time vs money and money vs money when the cost is still close to the same but....

For me and I'm sure there are a lot of us out there... it's more about the build.

Ya sorry to make it sound bad towards you eyegore. I didnt mean anything to sound that way either. I would love to be able to buy some things. I do like the satisfaction of building things myself. I am pretty new to haunting so on one side i would like to learn techniques just for the knowledge, and on the other, I have a lot of time on my hands so building why not spend more of it on doing things from scratch.

It is interesting learning about others methods and thoughts for building stuff. I kind of like to get people talking like this cause i feel it brings out more than just "I build mine this way" kind of talk. There are more reasons and opinions.

I've used the sheet moss you get at stores. Then painted it w/moss green latex paint; then with a clearcoat spray to keep it from running off. So, when the moss dies it still looks like it's alive. Worked very well.
And I've used the swamp (spanish) moss. After you remove it from the trees, do not store it in a plastic bag. It will turn to mush. trust me on this. lol

btw- have you seen these threads? :) http://www.halloweenforum.com/request-tuturials-go-here/102142-moss-how.html; http://www.halloweenforum.com/halloween-props/87996-moss.html; http://www.halloweenforum.com/halloween-props/79429-dryer-lint.html

okay... I just have to ask this... sorry... can't help myself.... WTH is sanctification? :D :D

I think making moss from dryer lint might set my allergies off! My poor nose would never be the same. I can barely empty it out without having a sneezing fit. Hmmm... might get the hubby to do it though. Saves me a trip to the Dollar Tree since I have all the supplies at home. If anyone can find a picture of this technique please post! Think it would be cool to see the affect before I put my sinuses at risk. :p
