I need some of your ideas on moss. There is no way I'm going to spend $3.99 for a bag of moss which won't even dress one tombstone.
Shred something and paint it green? I just don't have any good ideas right now.

Personally, I use the Faux Grass for Miniature Landscape modelling. It's about the same price as youve quoted above, but one small bag should get you through at least 4-5 tombstones. If you look at my 2010 tombstones thread, you can see the look. That much coverage took less a 3oz. yogart cup's worth of material.
Another option is to mix glue, green acrylic paints, and dryer lint. I havent tried this, sounds kinda messy, but Ive read that it works.

The amount of moss you use depends on your style. If you are stingy like me, then you'd be surprised how long a bag lasts.
I'm still working on my first bag of green sheet moss. I also bought one bag of that stringy stuff (Spanish moss?). Between the two, I've made 10 stones and a large haunt gate. Here's the typical amount I use on a stone:
Today, I just use the green sheet moss because it lays a nice carpet down. But if you want to stretch it more (it is more expensive) you can add in a bag of cheaper moss.

I t doesn't take much moss to make a big impact. The stone doesn't need to be covered in it. Just a little goes a long way. I bought a bag of the stuff from Micheal's and it is stull going strong for a couple years.
Eventhough I am Dead it is always warm inside my bed.

things that may look like moss if their painted steel wool , those copper pot scrubbers you can get at a dollar store, go out to a forest and take the moss from trees nature can provide all the moss you can grab, old fuzzy socks , some fleece material has a fuzzy side to it if you rip and tear a camoflage fleece it may give you that texture?? Natural sponge , or a denser sponge rippes appart also has that texture

Do you camp in the summer? I have been so many places camping where mosses and lichens grow wild. Pick some and dry it out.....i know, that doesn't help now, Besides, there is no substitute for Spanish moss!!!! There MUST be a synthetic product out there somewhere?

White glue and sprinkle saw dust it's what they use in film trust me it looks cool.
You have to paint the saw dust after it dries.

I made my own spanish moss for my trees by using a bolt of jute, unraveling it, tied the strands together in the center of a clump with wire, and spray painted them olive green.
