Need a little advise on scrim material. I plan on using a scrim over my front door and using a rear projector off to the side of the door projecting atmosfearfx ghostly apparitions floating bride. what is the best color scrim? I plan on buying the material online. What is the best scrim material that will be transparent enough to be able to clearly see into my home yet has great projection of my ghost.

I just bought the atmosfear FX projection material from Fright Props. They offer two different kinds, the one I got is the "cheaper" material and it is an off white. I am using it on a window in my garage haunt in during the day, it will look like a frosted window, and at night, it will look like a window and they illusion from Ghostly Apparitions will appear from nothing. I am also using a rear projection method. Going to be awesome. Brace yourself though, the small sheet I bought is $39.99. Luckily, it is re usable. Good Luck!

Yes i am looking for a scrim material that is almost clear. I'm trying to create the peppers effect without using glass or plastic. I with atmosfearfx would let us know what exact type and color shade they used in the demo that you attached.
Off topic, working on any new props this year Bigant?

On ebay - I purchased 2 yards of LIGHT GRAY SOFT NET MESH 2WAY STRETCH FABRIC 60"W Camisole Bridal Dance Wear
for $2.99 a yard and 2.99 shipping.

I'll try to do a quick test setup tonight and post some photos.
It's not perfect and I'm still looking for something that will produce a sharper image but it does certainly work. . With background lighting the mesh is transparent enough. The only complaint (and reason I'm still looking for an alternative) is that since its so transparent it result in an ok image vs a stunning image.

After reading this thread, I sat here for about a half hour and looked for mesh fabric online. Then it dawned on me that I could try the giant window screens I have in my sunroom before I order some of the fabric. I'll have to wait until dark to try it out tonight but will post my results. The screen is a light gray and hardly visible so I'm hoping it'll work and save me some $$.

My window screen is set over the glass window in my sunroom so I just did a quick test with it as is. It won't work if the screen is against glass because the reflection off the glass back onto the screen creates a blurry image. At least for me it did. I can only project against a window area so this wouldn't work for my set up this year but I plan on building something next year.

My intent is to use this mesh out in the middle of my graveyard to display some clips from atmosfear's bone chillers & Prudence Prim from Spectral Illusions (my wife is a librarian and we will inevitably have several Librarians at our party - so Prudence is in hommage to them). Would love to put Prudence in our library but that inevitably becomes a hang out spot during our parties.

Here's a quick video, sorry for poor lighting / quality of camera (fyi - top left corner had some loose fabric since I just threw over door vs properly hanging):

Danski - depends on the lighting. If you light the area behind the fabric but make sure light isn't falling directly on the fabric (other than projected source) you can be 2-3' away and won't notice it at all. If anything, there is a very slight haze in the room beyond. I shot the video from 3' away.

Not bad at all. I will look into that fabric. I have also looked at studio production's chameleon scrim fabric. Im a little scared that it will not be as transparent as i need. Your test set up is just about how my front door will be. Chameleon fabric comes in several colors and not sure what color i would need for this door way set up. Awesome test TZaddi !

Thanks Sofaman. I also looked at the Chameleon scrim and still might purchase some for the graveyard project and use what I have for a couple other areas. The two main differences I've noticed are 1-cost - it was $9 to have 2 yards shipped and I'm pricing out a piece of chameleon scrim that would be 6'x6' and think the initial quote is about $50. 2-transparency - with chameleon scrim if I understand correctly, the only items you will see beyond the scrim must have a direct light source and be lit well. The material I'm testing isn't as fussy but there are several more lighting tricks you can pull off with chameleon if you need to make things vanish / shadow / etc...

Hi!
It wasn't my video. I was replying to the post by Tzaddi93.
Usually the projector is off to the side and behind the scrim. You will need to be mindful that the projected image will continue . Some people will try to keep the cam low and pointed up ..this way the image will the continue up in the air and over the heads of the people viewing the video..earlier in the thread someone posted a link to atmosfearfx video tips and tricks.. definitely take a look at that if you can. It explains the different ways (front projection /rear projection etc)

In my case, the projector was on the floor and the bleed-through went out the window and up into the sky. The house is situated higher than the street to start with and I also set up my cemetery and fence in front of the window so no one would get close enough to look inside.

Moon93 is correct in that every circumstance is different and you just have to find what works through trial and error. And occasionally you have to swallow a bitter pill and admit the effect you want to create can't happen in the conditions you have to work with.

Lots of scrim reveal effects used at Disney's Carousel of Progress

In what seemed like nearly every stage of the Carousel of Progress rotating-theatre attraction at Disney's Magic Kingdom theme park, scrim reveal effect were used. First photo shows you the painted scrim, front lit, hiding the scene behind. Second photo shows the scene lit from the inside, revealing the scene. Anyone into scrim reveal effects should check out Carousel of Progress:
