Unless Dminor wants to use his mold to go into the replicas business :D.
Man, if I knew more about it, I would. But mould making and casting has expensive start up costs, although making a mould of the banshee wouldn't be too bad.

The only thing preventing me from doing it is that I had talked to someone about looking at the mould I bought and seeing if it's still in decent condition to make casts from and I haven't heard back yet.

If it's good to go, for at least one casting, then I may make more. I'll let you all know first before they start popping up on ebay. LOL

I don't know enough about casting and mold-making to be much help - I know enough that I could make myself a paper mache copy, but when it comes to anything involving rubber, resin, or silicone I'm definitely a newb. It definitely makes sense to get it checked out before doing anything with it. Especially if it did turn out to be a Disney mold, you don't want to mess around with damaging it by pouring stuff into it that it can't handle.

JWProductions, what are the measurements of the banshee? I'm wondering if the mold I bought is accurate, since I found that my bat stanchion that I bought from Ana was not (not even close).

The measurements on mine are roughly 8.5 tall x 5.25 wide x 2.75 deep.

Just got some interesting news back about the mold I won on eBay. The test casting shows brush marks that are consistent with a mold being made from a sculpture. So this mold may have been made by a cast member from a mansion used banshee, which could make it a second or third generation mold.

Exciting stuff!

Hi all,

I'm a bit late to the party but I too am a huge HM fan. As a result, this year I decided to start working some tribute into my haunt. For my first project I started off easy and made Brother Dave's stone:

I did eventually put the base on as well, but I don't appear to have a good photo of it completed. :/

Not satisfied with just one HM stone, I decided to do something more ambitious. Our Haunting Harriet. I didn't have time to weather the stone and one small piece is missing, but under haunt lighting I was very happy with it. However, I overestimated my size references and her stone ended up being close to 9 feet tall! That being the case, she made a hell of an impression on our visitors :)

I'd like to do more in the coming years, but my big focus this season will be on my new garage walkthrough which will also contain a few nods to my favorite haunted house.

That's great, Dminor, it's always exciting when an unknown ebay find turns out to have some good provenance. How did the test casting come out generally?

Hi everyone,
Just joined while enjoying DisneyWorld!
Big fan of The Haunted Mansion and I would like to duplicate the changing pictures effects in the ride. Some of the pictures appear to have UV reactive paint on them and glow with UV. I plan to have the UV synched to thunder sound effects, but I am not sure if the UV light sources can be turned off and on quickly enough for this to work. Anyone one have suggestions?
Thanks in advance. This seems to be a great site!

Greetings Foolish Mortal! I mean, uh...Hi Lovecraft (great name, BTW).
Never done UV strobes myself, but if you look around, there should be some great tutorials on strobes and controllers to mesh sound and light. My suggestion would be to use an LED UV bulb. There's no dwell time from switch to full brightness. I picked up a couple at Spirit after Halloween last year. Pretty sure they have some on the site year round.

Welcome! I wish I could say I was posting from Disney World :D. My understanding is that the HM changing portraits work using a back-projection technique, rather than transparent UV active paint, but paint works too, especially for us haunters not able to knock holes in our walls for the projection room.

Getting a good quality of UV light to flash quickly is always a challenge. The problem is that the best consumer-available UV lights are fluorescent tubes, which are very difficult to get to flash consistently or cleanly. I actually own a fluorescent "blacklight strobe" fixture, but it really doesn't have that clean on and off that a true strobe light does. People have looked at using mechanical shutters over the tube, like a rotating disk with sections cut out or a levered panel, but I don't know offhand of anyone making a lightning effect that way.

Don't even try using incandescents for this application. They won't ever put out enough UV to make this work.

UV LEDs are much easier to control, but the quality tends to be a bit hit or miss in terms of the emitted wavelength; if you can find LEDs that will light up your fluorescent paint well, though, they'll probably be your best option for a convincing lightning effect. As to getting them to flash to the lightning, if the Spirit bulbs Irishguy mentioned work with your paint and will take kindly to being flicked on and off that fast (sometimes the AC-DC converters don't respond well to that sort of thing), you could probably plug it right into a commercial lightning box and be on your way. You might need an adjustable system to keep the lights on a little longer than the lightning sound, though, because if the flashes are too fast no one will be able to see what the hidden image is. Otherwise, there are a variety of options for using bare LEDs and control circuits to drive them. Keep us posted! I'd love to see how it turns out.

CDW,
Thanks for all that information! Most helpful. I had not realized that the HM portraits were rear-projected. I'll take a better look when I go back:D
I'm not after a brilliant glow but enough to get some shift in the picture. I'll try the UV LEDs and see what happens.
I have some facility with digital art. I'll put some test images together, print it out on a matte surface, paint on that with UV paint and test the UV lights.
Can't do anything until I'm back home. I'll keep you guys posted. Thanks much!

Here are the UV bulbs that I mentioned; http://www.spirithalloween.com/product/gm-black-light-led-light-bulb/

I have a "Lovecraft/Cthulhu summoning gone wrong" in one corner of my haunt. It's a small round table with a burgundy velvet cover over it and all of the cult paraphenallia on the table (Cthulhu idol, Necronomicon, dagger, bowl full of blood, candles, etc.). Beneath the table, I have a funky summoning circle drawn out with flourescent chalk, a UV spotlight to light it up and a small MP3 player playing the Cthulhu summoning chant and bloody shoeprints. Over the whole thing is a shelf with Der Vermis Mysteriis, The Pnakotic Manuscript, The Cthaat Aquadingen and a framed picture of ol' HP himself. I need to get some articulated tentacles to make the whole thing really work though....LOL!

I've read bits and pieces of the L.Sprague deCamp bio, but only as they've been thrown into various collections. Never the whole thing. Check out Lumley's stuff if you haven't already. I based my scene on one of his mythos stories.
