CDW,
Thanks for all that information! Most helpful. I had not realized that the HM portraits were rear-projected. I'll take a better look when I go back:D
I'm not after a brilliant glow but enough to get some shift in the picture. I'll try the UV LEDs and see what happens.
I have some facility with digital art. I'll put some test images together, print it out on a matte surface, paint on that with UV paint and test the UV lights.
Can't do anything until I'm back home. I'll keep you guys posted. Thanks much!
Terrific podcast with scholar Bob Price discussing Lovecraft's work, life, and the Cthulu Mythos here. Love Bob's erudite, funny, and creepy delivery. I've never read any H.P. Lovecraft. But this makes me want to:

Hi everyone, I am so glad I found this thread. I also am a huge Haunted Mansion fan, am looking forward to work slowing down enough to read through this thread, and want to introduce myself. I moved back to Melbourne FL a couple of years ago, which has the huge benefit of being 1 hour away from Disneyworld, and I visit the Mansion as often as I can. Nothing better than being there at opening and riding it several times before others show up.

I have really focused on making ghosts the past few years, and decided after this past year to start honoring the Haunted Mansion in my display. I have a new but growing yard setup, so I will be focusing on the Graveyard scene. In fact I will be there this Friday morning to start documenting the graveyard scene, and get started on recreating some of the moving tombstones. Also very interested in picking up on those things that make the graveyard a Haunted Mansion graveyard. Hopefully this will be a good year for Haunted Mansion stuff!

Did read about plans to recreate the chairs, those are so cool!

Given what I've seen of your ghosts, I can't wait to see what you do with the HM as an inspiration. If you haven't already heard of it and you're looking for the single largest amount of HM-related pictures and info in one place, I can definitely recommend the "Long-Forgotten HM" thread over at MiceChat:

The Long-Forgotten Haunted Mansion Effect Thread 7: Further Realms of Fright

That's just the most recent (and longest) iteration of the thread - there have been six previous versions. Hope you don't have anything planned for the next couple of weeks...:D It tends to be a bit more focused on the Disneyland version rather than the Disney World version, but there's plenty of WDW-specific info in there too.

Oh, and if you're interested in the moving tombstones, have you found your way over here - this one in particular?

Most of my sculpted heads and stuff has a disney essence or a marc davis flavor to it.
That's awesome work! I'm seeing some Blaine Gibson in there too - I've always thought it was Gibson's faces that really sold the animatronics on the HM and Pirates.

I vigorously second the recommendation to check out the Long Forgotten HM thread #7 over at MiceChat. It's a must for HM devotees with a thirst for HM detail, lore, art and history.

CDW, thanks so much for the links, they have come in very handy!

I was at the gate at 8:30, and was one and only one there when they opened the doors to the mansion Friday morning. I got several rides in before others started to show up, and it gave me a chance to snap some pictures in the graveyard. I was surprised when I viewed them later and saw the same tombstones repeated over and over. A little research starting with the links you provided led to this:

What makes a graveyard Disney? In my opinion, it's the ghosts and the Grim Grinning Ghost song. As for the graveyard itself, none of them are close to straight upright, and the ones that move do not have simple, steady motion. My first project will be recreating the 'nine old men' tombstones, and duplicating some of the animation. I will post something when they are done!
