The Best Haunted Attractions You've Been To?

Also, have you ever gotten any good ideas for your haunts from them?

There was a haunted attraction called "Terror on Church Street" at Church Street Station in Florida a long time ago. It was definitely the best haunted attraction I've been to. Unfortunately, it's closed now, as is Church Street Station. It took two hours for us to go through the whole thing. The sets were of Hollywood quality. One dark room had bodybags dangling from the ceilings and swaying from left to right and we had to walk between the bags. Another room looked like the basement of pipes from the Nightmare on Elm Street. Of course Freddy came out and chased us out of there.

My second favorite haunted attraction is the Headless Horseman Hayride in Ulster, NY. They have a haunted corn maze with live scarecrows, a really good hayride through huge sets, and I think 3 or 4 haunted houses.

Last one was a really small attraction - I remember having to pass through a small room that looked like a dark walk-in closet with clothing racks on both sides. As I walked through, I could feel hands grabbing my arms through the racks. It was creepy.

It's a large attraction park with 6 different attractions. There are 3 haunted houses, tha "big" one has 100 different ways through it. They claim you'll never go through it the same way twice. One large outdoor maze, a haunted hayride, and a sayance (sp?) tent.
OMG, 100 different ways through it?! That's HUGE!

I haven't really been to many. Of the ones I've been to, I prefer the more "jump & boo" kind, as opposed to just elaborate sets.

Some have been more psychological...like being in a semi dark room filled w/ long sheets hanging from the ceiling, creating this maze that seemed near to impossible to escape from.

But my fave was in Fort Worth, Tx...can't remember the name. Just once it was over you suddenly were shoved out into a back doorway. You think it's all over, everything is quiet and then.....a dude jumps out from the bushes w/ a chainsaw scaring the crap out of you and you run down the street like an idiot!.....awww, good times! :)

Like RedSonja, I prefer the psychological scare. With that, the very best I ever went to was in my old home in Michigan, the Historic Holly Hotel.
It is actually haunted, and they put on a great scare. The cost was high, the lines were long, but you knew it was going to be great when you climbed the wide staircase and out of the dark, a massive scythe comes swooping down missing people by mere inches.
It only got better after that, and without the gore. Walking through a narrow pitch black hallway, things and actors scared the pee out of you.
Haven't found any better.

Do you guys like going first into those things? I always like to have someone in front of me and behind me.

Oh, those chainsaws are so scary. They sound so real! :)

Did you ever go into one of those rooms that has a psychedelic wall covering on it only to find out that there are people all covered in that same covering, so you're not sure where they are?

Ha! I always go behind someone too...and hold on to their shirt tails!! But in the end, I'm always the one who gets left in the back!

I've been in one of those rooms you're talking about.....not really scary, but fun.

Best Haunted attraction I have ever been to was in Panama City Florida a place called "The Haunted House". Someone was talented becuase it had rooms in it that were all decorated to a "t" of certain movies like A Nightmare On Elm Street, Psycho, and Friday the 13th. It was so awesome. Of course its not there anymore they have replaced it with some stupid Lazer Tag place. Its a shame too I went every year when the family took our yearly vacations.

The Whaley House in San Diego's Old Town. I swear this is true ... last year we were going on a Ghosts and Gravestones Tour and had time to kill before it started. We walked around Old Town and walked by this back yard with a circular garden area. I got this strong sense of sadness and an impression of a dark haired woman in a long dress. When we began the tour (at a cheesy fake seance) there was the picture of the woman I'd "seen". Turns out the back yard was of the Whaley House ( certified haunted) , the circular area was where the well was, the woman was the daughter of he family who drowned herself in the well because of a wayward husband. That house truly has a lot going on. You can sense so much sadness, anger, and sort of dissonance in it. Creeped me out.

Anyone who is in front of me hates it because I pull them backwards every time someone pops out to scare us. I eventually start crouching lower and lower, and all I can hear from the person in front of me (could be my husband, friend, whoever), "Let go! You're dragging me down! <scream!> Let go!" I also can't stop laughing through the whole thing because I get so giddy.

Withered Witch - Thanks, you just made the hair on my arm stand up. <shudder>

It was when I was a kid but this placed scared the jeepers out of everyone I mean everyone. It was in the parking lot for the theme park boblo island.
The haunted house was a huge castle looking house no squad building with fake house made around it, this was the real deal. When you wait in line a vampire would come out and scare the people waiting in line. In the tower window they had a witch sitting in a chair pointing at people and casting spells. When you first walked in, it was pitch dark and you turn to the right and headed down a ram. On your way down a Gorilla would sneak up behind you and hold someone in the groups hand or stay with the group but it was pitch dark so you had no clue and you thought it was your friend untill you came to a dead end and then someone would say has anyone seen my Gorilla. Then a stob light would go on and the person holding the Gorillas hand would feak out. Then the wall would open up and you would go down another ramp but it got smaller to the point you had to crawl. As you were crawling the floor became see through with a dead looking lady trying to get you. Then the ramp got bigger and you turned to a room with a hugh fan blowing, strobs lights, fire blazing, devils with pitch forks trying to get you and a boy chained to the wall. I remeber they had to shut the effects off just to get our group to go through, it was a really good scary effect. The next room was a work shop
with workers cutting people up and blood going everywhere it looked pretty real. I can't remeber the rest but I know it got even better. I do remeber the exit though when you exit a guy would jump out after you. I've never been in a haunted house that comes close to the detail, effects and scare factors this haunted house had. It's to bad it burned down cause it was a classic.

sorry for the long post lol

Yes terror on church street was awesome. Used to go there every year at halloween time. I have not been to skull kingdom in Orlando in a couple of years but it was really good when I was there. I remember a lot of little haunted houses in Wisconsin dells when I was a kid, they were all really cheesy. Our local Jaycees used to do an amazing haunted house but the last one I went to was terrible.

Crawling over a see-through floor with a Zombie underneath trying to get you....

A few months ago I was given two huge sheets of Bullet-proof glass from a Contractor doing a renovation at the International Airport down here. I've got them sitting in a rack, they measure 5' x 9' and it takes four guys to lift one sheet. I've been wondering, "What am I gonna do with this stuff?" Sometimes Jupiter aligns with Mars, and you have an AWESOME Hallowe'en Prop.

13, I'm SERIOUS, man, this prop will kick ass! I know EXACTLY who the Zombie will be, a guy I know named Kili, a big Samoan dude tha's really into scaring kids, He's been our "Werewolf" for the past 2 years, the "Head on the Table" before that.
We'll have a "cave" where the kids draw prizes as treats. Our treats are awesome, we're giving away DVD Players as Grand Prizes. After the real drw, we'll offer a "Bonus Prize" draw to one person from each group. The thing is, every "Bonus Prize" ticket will read CHAINSAW. When they read the ticket, I'll fire up the Chainsaw, the strobe light will come on along with the "Psycho" shower scene music, and they'll have to crawl over Kili to get out! Of course, Kili will also be illuminated by Strobe lights on either side. Oh, man, I can't wait!!!

I've heard of that place in Philly. Curious also as to whether it's any good. Didn't one of those ghost chaser reality series go there in one episode?

Headless Horseman Hayride in Ulster Park NY,

www.headlesshorseman.com

My fiance and I have been going for the past 5 years or so. It's a top notch experience (a bit pricey)...hayride with various stops at different scenes, a headless horseman gallops by at one point. They also have a few walk through haunts and a really cool corn maze. There is just some intangible quality about a hayride in the northeast that can't be duplicated....the smell of the leaves and corn, the chill in the air, apples on the trees..OOOhh...I just can't wait!!!

I totally agree!!!! I LOVE the Headless Horseman Hayride!!!! We went for the first time last year and are going to go again going forward. I love sitting at the back of the hayride where the ghouls grab you and chase the tractor.

Isn't it great? My only pet peeve, and maybe you had a different experience, was that the wait time is Lonnggggg, even though they make you reserve a time. We had a 9:eek:o reservation, and didnt get on till 10:30. I wouldn't have minded so much if it wasn't so cold that night. I wonder if they do that so you will visit the concession stands more/

Oh, the wait was long when we went to. I plan on getting tickets for the earlier ride (7 pm or 7:30 pm) which would mean that we would finally get on the hayride at 8/8:30 pm at the earliest.

It rained earlier that day and they put some hay down where we had to line up because it was very muddy.

Did you get your tickets ahead of time, or did you get them there? They sell out, but for some reason I saw people lining up for tickets on the day.

You're right about the atmosphere there - even the autumn smell in the air mixed with the smell of cider and caramel apples adds to it. It's great.

I loved the haunted corn maze. My husband ran away from me at one point and the ghouls surrounded me.

This isnt so much a halloween attraction, but If you live near rye, new york, I suggest taking a trip to playland and riding both Zombie Castle and the Flying Witch. Zombie castle has a TON of distortions animatronics, as well as some cool special effects. The park has a lot of other cool things to do.

I don't mind going first but I hate being last! I always feel like someone is behind me, and in the GOOD haunted houses there sometimes is... I think one of the scariest "gimmicks" for a haunted house (and not nearly used enough) is to just have some monster/dead guy/whatever following quietly behind you. I've been to a few that have done this but not many.

I went to a haunted trail event last year and they had one room where they had a wall covered in polka-dotted black fabric, and then 2 people jump out of it (wearing the same fabric) not bad...

I think the best haunted house I've been to was probably Dream Reapers in Melrose Park IL. I love how they use the "Sinister Scents". I* think* that was the haunted house where the last time I went, they stopped us halfway through and made all the girls go on alone (which was more fun) and then I found out from the guy I'd gone in with that after they made the girls go on one by one they let all the guys go as a group, heh (I told him it was because they knew the guys would be too scared.) That was pretty cool.

I also really liked the old Silo X that used to be in the Chicago area as well...but they're long gone :( I only went once though, and I think it was their last or next-to-last year.

I don't find things in haunted houses that I could use because I don't really have the money for most of the props in haunted houses, but I often find things I recognize from Nightmare Factory or other prop websites! It's funny to be walking with my sister/friends through a haunted house, a light comes on and suddenly a body is writhing in an electric chair and I exclaim "Hey! I saw that on Nightmare Factory! Wow, it looks awesome in person..." :D

That haunted corn maze at the Headless Horseman Hayride has mutant scarecrows that quietly follow you. Really freaky because it's so dark out there to begin with, though there is a sliver of moonlight that casts over the cornfields.

Some of their haunted houses have it too, but they follow you with knives, chainsaws, etc. It's a lot of fun!

I always call ahead and make my reservation, but you still have to wait in lien when you get there for the actual ticket.

Maddmatt911: The Rye in Westchester? Im not far from there at all..is this like a walk through deal?

Field Of Screams. It's in PA. I only went there once about 4 years ago, but it was a blast. I don't think they had lots of money or fancy equipment, but the atmosphere couldn't be beat. They had 3 events you could pay to get into or for a cheaper price do all 3. I loved the hayride. Plus they have a stage with live music and a big screen that plays bits of horror movies. I hear it's even better now. I want to go back this year, but might not be until the next.
