This weekend we took one of the first steps in the creation of a zombie animatronic that we are building for a film. This zombie tongue was sculpted in Chavant NSP clay, and will be cast in a special blend of latex. We poured up a basic plaster box mold last night, and should be ready to cast this week. Once the latex tongue is cast it will be articulated with a servo.

Here is our tongue armature prototype.

  1. A Silcast II urethane resin casting was made of the cavity inside the latex tongue.
  2. A strip of plastic was then placed along the bottom of the casting and we pre-drilled all the screw holes. This way, once the casting is segmented, the pieces will be secured with the proper spacing to match the original casting length.
  3. The casting was then segmented and ground to allow for an upward curling action.
  4. Finally (not shown in this photo) holes were drilled through each segment (near the tongue surface) to allow a control cable to be inserted.

The prototype works great, and may actually be used for the final tongue. We are also casting another tongue with thinner latex, to see if that provides more movement and remains tear/wear resistant.
