Where can you buys these from currently for a reasonable price? I have found nothing like this locally, Phoenix AZ, and only one place online for $50.

Ok cant post image. Its a black box with a green or orange bolt on it. Sorry.

We want to add lightning and thunder this year and this is the last peace.
I have an MP3 player with a download from this site of thunder.
I have a 30 watt guitar amp for the sound.
I have a shop light that I plan on using for the light sorce.
Plan is to put the light on the roof to bounce it off the front of the house.
First post, watched this site laster year. We really enjoy having the most exciting house on the street for the kids.
Thank you for the help

I know exactly what you are talking about....i have one and i bought mine at Target. It was about 5 years ago though and they were $19.99. It works great! I need another one for our backyard though, so i too am looking. I don't think they will be at Target though for another couple of weeks. get the back to school stuff out of the seasonal area!!
I think it isn't IN stores as much anymore - you have to either luck out on them or order online... check the link in Lurkerz's post: Lightning FX boxes (Halloween and X-mas versions available).

Great little lightning and "dancing" light effect.
Man this board is busy. Couldn't get my post to process for like 5 minutes! Thankfully I copied it before posting just in case...

Sounds like you are looking for a Lightning F/X Box. Here's a pic from BuyCostumes but they don't seem to carry it this year. Even Amazon says it's currently unavailable.

I bought two last year from ABC Distributing/LTD Commodities--mine were actually sold as an Xmas Lighting Box. Under $10 and instead of a lightning bolt it had a Xmas tree and was in green, white and red I think. Same box and worked the same way and easy to live with or paint the box for that price. If for some reason you can't find the Halloween version, look for a Xmas one. The box format was the same too. Here's a site that has the Xmas one -- don't know anything about this place BTW.
I'd jump on the one from Thing You Never Knew Existed or see if you can find a Christmas Tree shop that might carry one. But TYNKE has a good price and these things are getting harder to find. Ebay has some listed but everyone is looking for them for halloween now and the bids are getting up there.
Thank you. I will jump on the xmas version since, I figure it works the same way. Do these have a plug in them for the MP3 player or CD player to plug into or do they have a built in mic?
The Halloween version has both. If you use an MP3 player you would need a cable that has the MP3 mini plug on one end and an RCA type plug on the other end.
Thank you. I looked at the one on the link for Things you never knew existed and it actually shows the back. I will go to radio shack and get one.
I just ordered one and two other things, like a 12ft reeper that I just could not live without. LOL
Ok, came into this thread just to see what cspcrx was on about and if I could help, ended up buying the dang thing because I had wanted one and the price was right (although it has a Christmas Tree on it, ugh). That's it, I'm officially swearing off unusual threads (for the day only)!
Good question cspcrx,,, so I went and looked at the links,,, and of course I had to order two (like JA said, the price was right), can't wait till they get here so I can put them to spooky uses, and put something Halloweenish over the box.
I am glad to see others got something out of this as well.
But, dont blame me for your spending. LOL
They sure did have some great prices on that site.
Halloween is my favorite holiday and we have really gotten into decorating the house over the last few years. Started a few years ago with some black lights and a fog machine. Then I build a chiller, found that on this site, two years ago. This year adding the thunder & lightning, building a spider web for our big spider out of clothes line, found that on this site. Last year was our first halloween in our new neighborhood and we got lots of compliments and people really loved it. I hope this year will be even better. Thank you all for your help.
Does anyone know how many lights can be run off the Christmas Tree Lights? Any wattage maximum?

Thanks
If i remember correctly it says 500 watts max.

I'm pretty sure it can handle 500W max. If you haven't already invested in lights, consider using photoflood bulbs. They are medium-base, just like a regular bulb, but very much brighter. And you don't get the "yellowing" as the bulb fades off. These bulbs are either full on or full off, no visible cooldown period. I use two of the F/X boxes with two white and two blue bulbs, 250W per bulb. You can find them at camera stores for $5 - $7 each.
Thanks! I am considering using 2 75 watt strobes per box. I have not used strobes before and reading the descriptions, they can be adjusted to 1-20 flashes per second. Now I understand the incandescent bulbs dim and pulse, but how do the strobes work? The are either on and flashing or off, correct?
Just happened upon this thread and jumped over to the Things You Never Knew Existed to get my first "lightening" box!! I can't wait to plug in some lights and give it try. It was the Christmas version BUT it was only $12.00!! I can't wait to try it. Thanks to everyone's posts and now that I've spent even MORE $$ on this years set up - I better get away from the Forum tonight!! EEEK!

Hallow cspcrx -- SO YOU are the reason I pulled out my credit card tonight!! LOL - Saw that you are making a spider web for the house. We did that two years ago and it was a tremendous hit. I had seen the ones that are being sold on EBay - but my budget wouldn't budge -- so figured I could make my own. It was time consuming but VERY easy! We even made our own "victim" that we lower out of our send floor bedroom window until it traps itself in the web - then we tie it off and close the window. It dangles there until November 1. If I can help get you going, let me know with a message. I made mine before I joined the Forum - so there may be some excellent instructions already on the site. This year - we are covering the entire front of the house in spiders - big ones, little ones, as many as I can get my hands on! Picture my hubby up on the ladder this weekend - putting anchor hooks in the brick... eeek!:D

this may not be the best (lowest price), but the I-zombie.com lightning controller is worth a look. Its the best (most realistic) I've seen thus so far.
I want realism but $13 vs $130 (i-zombie).
OUCH
Thats a big difference. Works for me for now. I tried it with my shop light and a download of thunder from this site. After some tuning with the control knob I was very happy with the affect.
Good enough for me.
