I have a desire to make an oversized medieval-looking wooden door next year for a facade. It will probably be made from a thin piece of plywood that is covered with sculpted and carved foam.

How would you make it creak as it is opened?

I could do a sound file with a speaker setup, but it would be better to have it naturally creak — if possible. Anybody ever rig hinges or some other setup to purposely creak a door when opened?

fencing hinge would look good , hit the part with the pin with a hammer and it will creak ,the hinge needs to rub against the pin ,it works good

Thanks LOTD. I'll give that a try. Do you mean something like a chain link fence hinge or something meant for wood*— or does it matter?

Take paint thinner and remove any grease or lube, set it outside in the weather til next Fall when you need it, it should creak awhile, then record it.
I have had some real creaking beauts here in this 1870 house.
They were smart enough back then to get by using only two hinges on most of these doors, and they are not large or thick hinges, either.
