http://http://www.hauntedschoolofterror.com/

We are currently (10pm Saturday night EST) working on it so it may be down at times.

All we would like to do is get our website on the first page of google and others when you search "Weitrton haunted house" or similar

We are the only haunt in Weirton after all and we should come up.

We are mostly clueless and any help would be appreciated, We have listed the website with Google but beyond that we could use advice.

Thanks in advance!!

Have you put meta tags into the code to indicate what or who you are? Include weirton, weirton haunted house, haunted house in weirton, etc. Do a google search for a big company the view their source code. Finda the meta tags and modify in your pages code as necessary. Should allow it to pop up instantly then. Or at least first page

Visit http://www.onlinemetatag.com and follow the instruction and grab the meta code created for you, then place in into every page on your site.

Also, keep in mind that google only crawls pages every few days, so it may take some time before your search result ranking improves.

Not an expert - I'm sure others will have better suggestions. And I'm sure there's people out there that will recommend all kinds of voodoo. But having a clean website (preferably non-flash) with clear information is a good start. Make sure pages are named clearly and pictures have meaningful alt tags - that kind of thing.

Whoops! I wrote all the stuff below, and then I realized that your whole website is just images. That's a big problem. Google crawlers read the content of the page and use the text on the page to determine where it ranks and who it's useful to etc. If it's nothing but images, Google is flying blind. I don't think there's any way around that. I think that needs to be addressed.

Assuming that was done, I'd review the suggestions below.

You definitely want to have page titles on all your pages (these show up in the menu bar) Looks like you only have it on the homepage. I'd probably change it to "Wierton Haunted School of Terror | The Best Haunted House in Weirton" or something like that. And then "Weirton Haunted House | Directions" , "Weirton Haunted House | Specials" etc.

And use the terms "Wierton Haunted House" somewhere on the site for sure.

Then I'd also think about things like a Facebook page, and refer to the website there. Last I looked, one of Google's methods of rankings was to look at what sites linked to you, and how important those sites were. So i think having links form Facebook, Yelp, etc. can only help. Pictures on Flickr or Instagram or whatever might help too. Make sure you link back to the site, and make it real content - don't just put up junk. Google does a pretty good job of telling if you're trying to game the system.

If you're really into learning about this stuff, you can go to Lynda.com. They've got a free one week trial and I'm sure they have training videos on Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and setting up a public facebook page, etc.

If you've just submitted to Google, I think you need to give it a bit of time to crawl your site.

I'd also fix the path above (should start with http://www - you've got http:// in there twice. I think HF automatically prepends the link with http:// so be careful what you input.) And actually, "Weirton" is spelled wrong in the first instance. Not trying to be a jerk - I make typos all the time, but these forums show up in a LOT of search terms, so best to make sure your info is correct.

I believe the forums also allow you to put a simple link in your signature, so this would be another site that would link back. You should also have a section for "home page" under your profile and you could fill that in.

I agree, you shouldn't have any trouble coming up in a search like Weirton Haunted House or Weirton Haunted School of Terror with a little bit of work.

You'll also want to change all of the text on your homepage to actual text and not images. When Google crawls websites, it looks for text to use for its search results. As of now, it has nothing to use to provide a search result with (beside meta tags) and you don't have any of those either.

EDIT: Doh! Someone else noticed the same thing. lol

Okay. My day job is "web services." I do everything from website design to development of content management systems and back end programming to arranging web hosting and domain registration for my clients. I'll give you some professional advice, but in return I want the contact information necessary to add you and your site as a reference.

First: As far as meta tags go, be careful with that. Google implemented a ranking policy change that will actually reduce your relevance score for repeating topical terms too often. Instead, what you really want to do is get other folks to link back to your site. But this also has pitfalls, because Google has an algorithm to analyze blogs and label them as real or spam/canned.

One possible enhancement I see is the fact that according to the dates & times page, it appears that your event moves from school to school. Adding the addresses of those schools will greatly enhance your ranking.

Also, you have a slogan that should be on your site and you didn't even know it: "We are the only haunt in Weirton"

Second: extensive font support was introduced with CSS3. You don't need to rely on images to display most fonts anymore. http://www.w3schools.com/css3/css3_fonts.asp

If you're going to stick with using images, then at least start using the alt attribute of the image tag to insert the text for search engine spidering. It will also compensate for material that ends up illegibly small, like the white text on the first page that announces who benefits from the haunt.
