You are escorted to a totally dark room and left in there alone. You hear a terrifying sound. What is the sound?
Suddenly, the lights come on and you scream in horror at the thing in the room with you? What is the thing?
The sound and the thing do not necessarily need to be associated.

the sound is fingernails digging into drywall and the thing is a child crawling on the ceiling above me with her head turned in an abnormal way and looking down at me.

I have done all three of these things at Ravens Grin!
I have a small furnace in one room that has a huge CONDEMMED Actual gas Co. sticker on it that hides a secret access.
Another actual working furnace had a small (very small) little air hose taped to the side of the actual gas pipe that made a continious "Hissing" sound , imitating a gas leak! Not many noticed it, to dark and noisey around there.
We have no whole house sound track here, ambient sounds Rule and since we also live here people below our living space often freak to the sounds of a mere house cat scampering around or the dog clicking toenails across the floor!
The Bad Dream Bed tips, providing a very quick ride downward in darkness... you sit there seemingly alone in the all encompassing dark... no sound at first them you hear the multiple voices of a chorus of little girls singing:"Twinkle, twinkle, little star...." This may not sound scary or creepy, but it is! (Actual live little girls, singing no recording)
I once built a mechanical mouse that would "run" up the wall, which sent some groups screaming and running the opposite direction, sometimes resulting in a pile-up of bodies on the floor and if I had a picture of them piled there, you would swear a football play had just happened and I should be wearing a striped shirt, marking the ball's progress! (All of this had to happen, of course with all the lights "ON", big and bright!
I know. I don't play "Fair", scares aren't supposed to ever happen with all the lights "ON".. but they sure CAN!
