I was thinking about doing Xiabalba, or the Maya underworld, because the Maya predicted that this era of the world would end in 2012. I had it all planned out. I was going to put up a giant pyramid in the backyard. I wanted swamps and forests (tropical) around it. Then my Mom pointed out that it might snow. So now I ditched the pyramid idea and I think it will be it in the garage. It likely will have running water too, but it will be manageable.

Amazing Idea. The Mayan architecture lends perfect to Halloween.

I spent 4 months exploring Mexico in a van half my life ago visiting as many ruinas as I could find. Palenque was my favorite. The capstone of Pacal Al Rey is amazing. It really does look like a man in a spaceship staring through a persicope. Especially when you see it in person. The sheer size of the thing is humongous.

Their skulls and reptile faces are pure evil and would make a good addition even of you were not trying to make a Mayan theme. (AKA reusable)

Wonderful idea. So original. There's a lot of good material out there to google now that the 2012 theory is out. Keep us apprised of your progress and, Oh yes, lots of pictures.

I'm thinking of having the opening being a maya person praying to an anamatronic god, the scare coming from a snake behind them lunging towards them. Then, the spiked ceiling room, opening in to a cave with no roof, like a small valley, then leading to a large waterfall. I want to make the path go behind the waterfall, then curve arount and follow the stream into a cave.

what about adding the crystal skull legend?
Isn't it something to do with 13 crystal skulls collected from different parts of the world, put together to make some big burst of energy or something? This I believe has mayan roots.
The mayan history is very interesting.
Have you ventured into Belize to see any of the ruins there?

I am going to add in the Crystal Skull legend! I have purchased one bottle of the Crystal Head Vodka - Cool Bottle - Great Vodka!!!! I don't know if I will be able to afford 13 bottles, however all the heads are not the exact same!

Cheap trick to make crystal looking skulls....
Use a skull form and wrap it with clear packing tape. First layer sticky side out (so it doesn't stick to the skull) Next 3 layers sticky side in. This will take the shape of the skull form, then cut it up the back to remove from your form, tape back together and there you have it.
I have made whole dummies using this method and had my husband and daughter as the "molds."
One dummy is about 4 years old now and has even been out in the snow. He looks a little old and tired now ( sagging) but it is actually adding to the creepy affect!!
The less expensive packing tape actually seems to even work better!!
Four layers is plenty to hold it's shape well.

I'm planning on phasing in some props this year so they're ready for next. I'm building a jungle-ish set and starting to build post-apocalipitc props, hopefully sometime this year. At this point I think it makes more sence for me to make just the first scene Mayan, then all the sets after that would be post apocalyptic/ zombie. I think that would be cool. :)
