For my 2020 Halloween party I'm creating a fake newspaper that I will deliver to everyones house a few weeks before the party. The newspaper will actually be Phase 2 of the invitation process.

Here's some backstory to fully understand the concept: Last year my theme was a Morgue. I came up with the name "The Rondy Morgue", the name is a play on the town we live in. The idea was that Dr. A. Kohler (me) runs the morgue, and he is a very bad guy. He's done terrible things with human remains, illegally sold body parts, etc. I even had official looking postings on my front door from the Department of Health and Public Health Inspector notices that said this "business" was closed. It was great.

This year I wanted to do a different theme, but I thought it would be cool if I kept everything in the same universe as last year, as in the things that were part of the theme last year still exist in the world and affect what's going on at this years party. So Dr. A. Kohler has now been arrested and charged with all sorts of terrible crimes. His wife, also Dr. A. Kohler, was also arrested but the charges were dropped as it was determined she was not involved. With her husband going to prison she has left the Morgue business and is now a highly esteemed scientist working at a Museum.

So this years theme is Spiders. I'm going to turn my house into a sort of Arachnid Museum, which I'm calling the Rondy Arachnid Museum & Scientific Research Center (RAMSRC for short).

Phase 1 - everyone receives a letter from the RAMSRC inviting them to an exclusive tour of the Arachnid Museum.

Phase 2 - everyone receives the newspaper with the front page headline announcing a terrible accident at the museum, and hints to something sketchy has been going on. Newspaper also elaborates on the Rondy Morgue situation.

Phase 3 - everyone receives a postcard announcing that the museum tour is still on despite the recent tragedy. I'll throw in some subtle clues that Dr. A. Kohler, who escaped from prison, is somehow involved working with his wife at the museum and he caused the accident.

So my house will be decorated as an Arachnid museum, but after the accident all the spiders escaped and caused all sorts of havoc. Spider webs everywhere, corpses wrapped in cocoons, etc.. I also want to set up a lab area that shows experiments of creating half humans half spider creatures.

If you read this entire post I thank you. Now here are pictures of the newspaper, which is far from complete. It's a mix of articles I wrote, or other people wrote, articles from The Onion, and real life articles I found from old newspapers. I'll continue to post updates as I add articles.

If anyone has any ideas/suggestions for any of this please feel free to comment. Thanks!

Uusually I'm a lurkere but just had to comment on this one ...wow...loving the theme, the backstory and cetainly the fake newspaper.
Been doing newspaperarticles as part of my elaborate invitations a few times but never a newspaper as a whole.
Those invitations in phases work great to build up the suspence for your guests. I also find it helps them grow into their character. (I usuually combine my party with a murder mystery)

I'm thinking of doing a museumthemed party too this year.
Most def will be dropping in regularely for your updates!

An update.

This didn't happen for 2020, so now it's part of the 2021 invitation. Good thing is I've had more time to work on it. Newspaper is at 8 pages, most pages are about 80% filled.

I decided to add a custom crossword puzzle to the Backpage. I made it myself, it's definitely not the best crossword puzzle, and I broke many of the standard crossword puzzle rules. But it's got several Halloween themed answers, and there's a secret message in there somewhere!

Hi ,
Fun idea with the museum invitation , the newspaper and the escaped spiders in a museum , very creative .
A couple of ideas that might work for you . If you have a local print newspaper , you can get end rolls of blank newsprint that they throw out for free . Cut into a size that fits your printer and you can print your newspaper on real newsprint .
Maybe make a want ad in the paper for an exterminator needed immediately or maybe a flyer for a fake exterminator service that could be part of your invitation .
You have made great progress so far , looking forward to seeing your updates .

Wow, those are some great ideas. I never thought about an insert. That would definitely give it that real newspaper feeling, and allow me to throw in another layer of the story and maybe some more inside jokes. And I'll definitely be doing the want ad. Thank you for the great ideas!

The file is too large to attach to a post, so if anyone wants to see how the newspaper looks you can get the pdf here: Rondy_Gazette_June_3_2021.pdf

Don't forget to have an add for a funeral home - tie it in with the Rondy Morgue somehow. Maybe feature some of your guests in some quick stories? Or even their obituaries - with the date of the party as the date of death? Could possibly have a plastic spider inside of each paper when it's delivered too...so it falls out when they go to read it.

LOVE the idea of a spider falling out of the paper when they open it!

Unfortunately, I can't feature an ad of the Morgue, because part of the storyline is that the morgue was forced to close after the owner was arrested for violations of the mortuary code. But I do have several ads in the paper that feature friends or inside jokes.

Right now about 5 or 6 of the stories feature or mention some of the guests, hoping to bump that up.

If anyone wants to make a word search puzzle, there are applications or sites that you can download the words you want to use and it comes out as a word search puzzle plus one copy has the answers. I suspect a little digging will turn up somewhere that does crossword puzzles, too.

First of all, I love the amount of effort you're putting into this. I bet your guests will love it!

Secondly, I hate to be that guy... but for your front page it's actually spelled "wreak havoc" - unless of course you're going for a play-on-words. I can't read the article copy because it's too small on my screen - so maybe there's a "reak" joke in there? Not sure.

Thirdly, since you're doing spiders, maybe throw in a reference to Peter Parker in a story or ad or byline or something?

Wow, you're a lifesaver! I was literally going to email it in tomorrow for print. It's definitely not an inside joke, just a glaringly obvious typo getting past the editor-in-chief!😂

Thank you!
