So seeing as the missus piped up and said she wanted a Pirates of the Caribbean theme this year I jumped straight on it before she changed her mind... and started making a cannon. We want a ship wreck scene in the garden (Plus it will go with our general beach theme we have planned for the top part anyway..) and mainly an old and encrusted look to things. It also has to be 'babysafe' as we have an 18 month old who likes to climb around..

I made the cannon from a foam roller that cost £2 in a charity shop a while ago and now has finally come into use... I drilled out the barrel with a very long spade drill bit and use a heat gun to melt it a bit. A few strips of eva foam made the reinforcement bands and a wooden bowl and spraycan lid screwed on made the cascable. The trunion is just a piece of broom handle pushed through (I need to get a bit of pipe lagging to cover and finish those off) It was then liberally coated with expanding foam and sprayed brown. It was then given a rough coat of bronze coloured paint, then highlighted with a greeny white and then a black wash. I will probably will repaint bits to make them look more like they are underwater, or at least to reflect a blue/green light a bit better. So far it has cost about a tenner for materials, roller, spray foam and paint and a couple of hours work.

So here it is atm.. complete with with several temporary 'starfish'.. any feedback or suggestions greatly received..

It looks so real you can almost see the salt water dripping from it. Great job.
