Hi Halloweeners,

As the title suggests I am having trouble thinking up ideas for mine and my DH's costumes to match our party theme.
This year’s theme is kinda like a garden of horror, or evil garden...whatever you want to call it.. and to give you an idea on how we're executing the theme..

We have a very big garden that is split into three sections, the lowest closest to the house with (awesome) stacked stone retaining walls, the second garden up stone steps and through a set of rose covered arches, the third up one more raised path and through more rose covered arches (this garden is where our chickens live and our small orchard of fruit trees).

So for the party we are using just the first two gardens and the two pergolas/patios that run off the house.. Under the first patio will be a huge spiders nest and some creepy furniture that will hold the buffet, there will be hanging pictures, candelabras, an old vintage leather chair and so on...basically a vintage scene - all covered in web.
Then moving into the first garden there will be a skeletal cooked corpse on a spit with glowing coals underneath, a dug up grave nearby, and a nasty little dinner table scene complete with cutlery, goblets, unfinished food (slices of body parts) dead flowers in a vase etc. A giant spider will sit in a tree in this garden, and the tree will also house a hanging web-wrapped and spinning corpse. And in the stone wall garden bed we'll have an evil pumpkin patch with a pumpkin sentinel (Pumpkinrot style) standing over it. (SUPER excited to be making this guy this year) And lastly, an evil plant (think little shop of horrors) twisting around in one of the garden beds...
Entering into the second garden there will be a scary beast down by our shed in dark recessed shadow, it'll be triggered by either hubby or myself, and when our guests go by it it’ll growl I think, and maybe it’s eyes will light up – not sure yet..
From there our guests will pass a small haunted pond with reaching hands, a dead face looking up and if we can wing it - floating fish bones.. Then moving in a bit more will be the cemetery, here we'll have tombstones with a guarding gargoyle on a column kinda scattered around a tree and all enclosed inside a rickety old wooden cemetery fence. We have a cool bird bath in this garden too, and if I have time I reeeealy want to make a naked woman's bust, white as snow and bleeding from her eyes, nose and mouth to go in the bird bath.. (I saw it on Pinterest and nearly wet myself with excitement! Hahaha)
Anyway... we’ve also got a little brick potting shed in the second garden, its kinda hidden behind a lemon tree and a wall of climbing roses.. We’re going to turn it into either a murderers shed, or maybe a witches hut - either way we have a whole heap of props from previous Halloweens that will fit in there nicely. And we've decided to stick the fog machine in there too to spill out fog through the cemetery...
We also have two scarecrows that we use everyday in our veggie patch. I'm hoping to goth them up and stand them in the last two archways creating freaky silhouettes and preventing guests from entering through the aches to the third garden where they will potentially disturb our chickens...

SO, based on all that.... what do you think we should dress as? Usually our themes are pretty solid so the costumes are easy, but this theme is tricky...

I was kinda thinking maybe evil elves, or nymphs or something. I have ideas of kinda dark clothes with capes and freakish organic headpieces with sticks and twigs and bird skulls in them. But that's it, that's all I can come up with.
I had thought of doing witches, but I kinda wanna save that for an overall theme some time in the future...
Whatever we do dress as will have to be DIY'ed by us as we've blown our Halloween budget this year already !

Thoughts?

TIA

Your party sounds like it is going to be awesome! Hope you have fun. The only thing I can think of for a costume is lawn gnomes. The fairies would be awesome too.

Some kind of evil pruner, with garden shears on the rampage. I saw a poster with "The Gardner: He plants the seeds of evil." That might be a cool idea to think about. It would be fun to pass out diff fake evil seed packets to people during the night. You could label all the different places in the garden where he planted his evil seeds and the scary things that sprouted.

Dark butterfly, or butterfly catcher. You could carry a black net. I've seen some pretty cool monarch butterfly capes out there. Her story could be of an evil collector that pinches the wings off all the butterflies and pins them to her hat, or veil, or cape. A scary, gross look crysalis made of paper mache hanging around.

A southern debutant serial killer who buries all her victims in her rose garden and names all the roses after those she kills.

Your Halloween garden party sounds AMAZING. I would be ecstatic to show up at a Halloween party and discover that's what's awaiting!

I think your idea of dark clothes with dark organic headdresses actually sounds like a perfect way to go. Twigs, fake skulls, big luscious dark flowers, maybe a black veil attached to yours, antlers on his, like a take on Herne the Hunter and his dark bride and their Samhain garden of horrors. :)

I took the liberty of grabbing a few pins that made me think of your idea:

I also think a fairy/nymph would be wonderful. I made a wood fair costume for someone, and a really easy and effective way to add to it was getting bending covered floral wire from the craft store that looked like vines. I made a wreath and arm bands with it, and it was great.

For the fella, I would think a tree man would be cool. Or a druid, even, as I associate them with the woods.

Thank you for the input Halloweeners,
Handfulofrubies, I love your idea of an evil pruner, but ironically one of our guests came as that two years ago! So we can't use it :(
chocolatemice, thankyou for taking the time to add those pins, they have given us some great ideas :)
DH and I have decided to dress as dark elves.
I'm going to make us look very organic, with wild hair, organic headpieces full of twigs, leaves, and I'm just about to mache some bird skulls. I've made horns for us to wear on our head as trophies. Now I just need to nail the makeup to make us look evil, instead of friendly.
I think if time permits, I'll also make weapons for us. I'm really excited to do this, I'm thinking - arm bands with knives, a warriors belt with all manner of torture instruments on them, and a spear each :D

I'll post some progress photos as I go :)

Thanks again.
