I know some of us have put a few small decorations up indoors already, but when do you bring out the big stuff? I can't wait until October, so I'm planning on September 1st. I'm starting with fall themed, then onto all out scary..

September 4 my birthday to the 24 is when I have everything up. I do everything very slowly so for example one day is laying out extension cords next is getting Halloween down from my attic.
Then next I will be putting lights on my gutters then small inflatables then big inflatables etc etc.
On a side note I have so much stuff I’m gonna need to buy a generator so any helpful tips would be appreciated on setup.

Most of our indoor stuff is up all year. I won't cover the shelves and ceiling with the spider webs till October. The outside stuff goes out as early as I can stand the evening/night temps in September which is usually about the middle of the month.

We are similar to lilibat in that much of our stuff is up in the house all year. Always a little interesting when any type of service provider comes in to do a repair or something! As for outside we usually start around the beginning of October but then never really finish as much as we want to so this year I want to start no later than Sept 1 but am dying to start now. I do have one skeleton rabbit in my hosta garden and a big skull planter on the steps that I found at JoAnne Fabrics this year out already.

We have a few things out all year. Zombie lawn gnomes, gargoyles guarding each entrance. We also leave the necromancer in the front window all year because it deters church people from ringing our bell.

July 5th - Fall inside and out
August 1st - Halloween inside (bedroom and kitchen have been decked out since the end of June this year - just couldn't wait!)
Sept 1st - Halloween starts to trickle outside. It starts with small hints of the imminent haunt. From there it will strategically leach out until the October 1st and then it picks up. The new large and main features, I wait until a little closer to Halloween. It's all about the anticipation and building excitement, um, I mean impending doom.

October 1 is the day to start putting up outside stuff in the front yard. Sometimes I string lights or rig other larger items in the backyard/garage before that but typically July - Oct is the planning period.

I don't put up a lot of indoor décor - just for the dinner party after the haunt on Oct 31 - that goes up the day or so before.

Indoors is usually September 1st or Labor Day weekend. I'm really fighting the urge to start early this year though.
For a couple of years, I'd start with the generic fall stuff but I never really enjoyed it much. Then I thought, why am I decorating with the stuff I don't care about for two months (september then again in november) and the stuff I LOVE gets only one month? Crazy, right? So now I start with lots of jack o'lanterns and the more whimsical things in september and gradually add in the darker creepier items toward October. Generic fall is only for those few weeks between Halloween and Thanksgiving now.
I don't do any outdoor decorating before October. The Texas heat and intense sunlight takes it's toll on everything in my yard until it finally cools down some after the beginning of fall.

I have the "rule of birthdays" - mine in next week (8/29) so at the minimum, fall leaf garlands will come out so I have some color. My big maples are the last to turn in the neighborhood & don't drop their leaves until late November <expletives> Then the Spawn's birthday is 9/28. That means 9/29 is Go Time! At least the cemetery fence, sign & headstones & blowmolds will be put out that day & the rest oozes out at my leisure. It's nice that it's a Saturday this year!

The only hitch I'm forseeing is that this is also Spawn's 21st birthday so there will be some celebrating happening that weekend!

The cemetery & all traces of outdoor Halloween come down 11/1

Tradition - is fencing goes up (after cutting lawn short) Labor Day Weekend, then stuff keeps being added, moved and packed away, power goes on Oct 1'st, on the 31st the Gemmy's come out. 90% comes off lawn the night of the 31st, with balance gone before school lets out on the 1st (and lawn cut 1st time since labor day).
HOWEVER, neighbor has their house listed, I was hoping to see under contract by now (3 months). So Now they only have 10 days to get under contract, before house hunters realize what goes on next door during Halloween Season (LOL), maybe a Haunter will move in!

Mine goes up the first week in Oct at the campground, then all has to come down the second week on Sunday and Monday, really need to quite adding to it as it already takes me 3 trips just for the Halloween stuff. Maybe this year I'll put some up after I get home duirng the weekend. It gets exhausting tearinhg that much down and transporting it in less than 1 1/2 days.

This weekend everything gets cleared off surfaces (tabletops, fireplace, counters, etc), hidden away (usually in the back of the closets), and everything dusted. Next weekend the Halloween chaos begins! As I’ve gotten some new stuff this year ☺, things will be grouped for scenes I am trying to create and rearranged a few times until I get the look I’m aiming for. If there are any additional small pieces needed for the scene, I’ll hunt them down and add them as they are found.

This is why the stores that put out their Halloween merchandise first get my money. Come mid September, I’m done already. Any additional buying will likely be clearance items or those couple of “I’ve just got to have!” items that I see you guys post about.

Just as I feared, I did NOT make it to September 1st! :D
I don't have nearly all of it out yet but I did go ahead and arrange all the new things I've bought so far. And I did my fireplace mantel. Next weekend I'll set up my spooky town village, which is normally the first thing, but this year it will probably be the final phase of my indoor decor. That's ok - I'm not afraid of change. ;)
