Howdy all, I took the last two evenings to start sculpting a new witch head for the yard haunt. This is what I have so far, just clay -- no paint or anything yet. Please give me some honest feedback on how I can improve this.

I'm not sure of the look you are going for, but she looks like a nice old lady. In fact I could picture her as a nun in a habit before you put the hair on. Maybe she is the nicer of the witches in your coven - no problem with that. She a great looking scuplt no matter what.

I think it's the brows, kinda sad expression. You have enough room there to build a more 'angry type grimace if you want. Anatomically, the cheek bones are low as well, but there's nothing wrong with a little incorrectness to cause some uncanny valley either.

Still, great sculpt.

Low cheek bones is definitely something I can fix. Maybe reduce the size of the bags under her eyes and raise up the cheek bones a bit. The wig is really cheap and I think that takes away from the sculpt, too. I keep looking at Lauriebeast's sculpts and I just want to improve my skills.

Thanks for the comments. I've made some alterations and posted some new pics. Revised the face by reducing the cheekbones and bags under her eyes. I also smoothed out the lips a bit and reduced the size of the nose.

Worried she is looking more like a founding father than a witch at this point.

If you want her to look kind and benevolent, you've hit it. Mean and scarey, no. Nice work, though. I prefer my witches threatening, mean, evil, spiteful....

I think it looks great and I applaud you for your work.

As for the expression, maybe the eyes are to large, and perhaps just slightly low on the face (maybe)

On the human face;

- eyes are mid point from top of head to chin.
- space between eyes is the width of one eye, with the head being ~5 eyes wide
- the face is divided in thirds:
1) hair line to brow
2) brow to bottom of nose
3) bottom of nose to bottom of chin.
- bottom of the lower lip is halfway between the bottom of the nose and the chin
- eye pupil aligns vertically with corners of lips
- top of ears align with eyes (not the pinna, but where the ear meets the skull)

The more symmetric a face is, the more beautiful people tend to find it.

What's good about monsters is errors in symmetry make for a creepier look.

But what do I know, not like I can do a good sculpt.

That's a lot of good information. I think I was constricted by the base form of the styro head. Next time I'll take the time to make sure I'm getting the eye placement right from the beginning! That should help carry through the entire sculpt.

Well I am impressed . I like the rework on the eyebags better. I can see her holding a newt by the tail getting ready to drop it in the cauldron with that smug look.

Had fun with the first one, so now I'm going to sculpt a second. I know it's too late for this Halloween, but I can always get a "head" start on next year!
