Rear projection screen, broken down wall facade

So part of my haunt this year is a broken down wall with a projector behind it. i just finished the screen and thought id share. I'm kind of flying blind on this because i've never done it before but it seems to be turning out nicely. hopefully the facade will come out as well. at the moment I'm in test phases with this thing. Making sure its going to work before finalizing it. i needed the screen done so i could tell where to put the crack in the wall when i make that. here's a few pics of the screen as of now. tonight I'm going to do a projector test and make sure that works. i used a cheap frosted shower curtain from Walmart and furring strips for the frame. i found the shower curtain worked the best so far. it catches the light of the projector really well and defuses the light behind it well enough to were you cant see the point of light the projector gives off. the wood hanging from the roof is the beginnings of the frame for the wall. i also plan on putting little windows on either side of the crack so the projector can be seen threw them as well. maybe, if it looks good. lol! :D

Ok i managed to get outside tonight and take a few vids of how its working out so far. I'm pretty happy with the out come so far. just got to tweak a few things once the wall is up and it should look great. i did notice however that the further i puled back the projector the more crummy it looked. its closer to the screen here and looks much better. so in order for the windows to work it'll have to be a bit further back and ill loose some quality. expect further test videos! very excited about this. really hoping i can pull it off. ha ha! :D

one of the vids is kinda shaky, i was being attacked by about a thousand mosquitos. :p

the projector I'm using is an iRULU 2600 lumen. its not to bad. i want better but it will do for now. click on the pics and it will bring you to amazon if you want to check it out. :D

here's a pic of the screen with the light on just so you can tell whats going on in the background.

Few more pics of getting the hole shaped for maximum viewing without being able to see the frame. With the aid of the projector

re: "further i puled back the projector the more crummy it looked" If you get a chance please post the distance between the screen and projector you end up with. Also let us know how much other light behind or in front of the screen effects the display. I too am playing with projectors for the first time and am considering rear projection on a panel that will be the back wall to the Garage Room I set up. I'm worried I won't have enough room between the real garage wall and the screen and I'm worried what other lighting in front (e.g., prop eyes) and in back (lights from power supplies, prop controllers, audio systems) will do to the display. I noticed what looked like a flashlight shining directly on the screen in one of your videos. It didn't appear to mess it up too bad.

sure thing, once i do another test ill let ya know what i come up with. i can tell you from the last test in the pics above the projector was 13 feet from the wall and in the videos its about 9 or 10. so depending on what projector you have you do need a bit of space. the one i'm using has a 6 feet minimum and the screen size is pretty tiny at the distance.

it was a flash light. i was testing what you're wondering about. ill shine it from behind the screen next time and see how it reacts to that. there was a light on coming threw a window behind it and it didn't effect it at all. from what i can tell its not effected by light much unless its super direct like daylight or the outside light being on. it might even work then i haven't tested that out yet.

got the wall cut out and now working on the details. drew it all out and next is carving. the screen stand i made didn't work out because you could see it to well. The hole in the wall would have to be super small for it to work. Even painted black it would ruin the effect. kind of figured as much but had to test it. so i'm just making the screen frame part of the wall frame and it sits right up against it. there's still about an inch or so between the screen and wall so it'll still get a bit of depth from it. think it might work better this way.

My work space is a mess. Need to clean that. ha ha!:D

Thanks guys!

Did another projector test a couple nights ago and got some done on the wall. put the windows in and carved the stone trim for them. now i'm working on carving the detail of the hole.

Here's the vids from the latest test. id did use a flood light to test out how it would react to outside and inside lights. didn't effect it to bad on the outside. you can see it for sure when you go behind the screen but i think you could get away with smaller lights.

I test the lighting in this one

Here's what i've got done on the wall so far.

Made some templates for the windows and tested them

Once i was happy with the placement i drew them on with a marker so i could get a better idea of what they would look like

After a few tests and finally making my mind up i decided they looked pretty good and went ahead and cut them out.

I wanted stone trim around the window so to do that i took the cut outs of the window and used those as templates.

Once i had that down i drew a one and a half inch border around it.

Then cut it out with a jig saw

I then used the first as a template for the second and cut that out.

I then drew out a stone design with a marker. after that i first tried using a dremel for the grout lines but found that it was way to clean and a bit bigger than i wanted them so i just started to use 150 grit sand paper and sculpted it by hand. worked much better this way. the sand paper allows for more control over depth and other little details. Very happy with the result.

To get more of a stone look i used the spray bottle and heat gun technique. Spray the foam down with a little water and then wave the heat gun over it and the areas without water shrink down a bit creating a cool stone look. It works great! gota be careful with it but as long as you get the feel for it its pretty easy. i practiced with a spare piece beforehand. Other than that i just used the sand paper and a wire brush to roughen it up and took a few chips out here and there.

And here they are tacked up temporarily so i can get the placement right once i glue them on. that's it for now. got a bit done on the bricks on the wall today but not much. Hopping to finish it tomorrow. :D

Looking awesome! Really clever idea on how to hide the screen edges, looking forward to the final product.

Thanks guys! just got all the bricks carved out. got to do a few things here and there but I'm almost ready for paint. not sure what I'm doing for that just yet. trying to decide weather or not to put texture on it. ill post some pics tomorrow once I'm close to finished with the details.

I'm done with the carving. Foam bits every where. ha ha! I got some paint today as well and did a test on a scrap piece to see how the colors i picked out would look together. think it came out pretty well. I ended up adding sand to the main wall paint and it looks pretty good so think I'm going to stick with it.

Thanks for posting. This is what I was looking for.

What is the overall size of your screen? I have 2 separate garage bays and I will be using with 2 separate projectors and would like to go this route.

Awesome job!

Thanks!

I noticed there's not a whole lot of reference for this particular kind of build out there. i searched a lot before hand. Mostly window and door projections. that's why i wanted to post as much as possible about this so others might have an easier time if they were looking.

The main screen is 64" x 67". It's the biggest i could get using the shower curtain. i looked every where and that was the largest one i could find. its a shame cause it works super well for this. i could get some projection material but that costs 100 times more. haha! the shower curtain is only like $2.95 or so compared to $150 to $200. think ill take the curtain. I've also been looking for a frosted vinyl or some other type of plastic sheeting with no luck.

The windows each have there own little screens that are about 30 inches by 24 inches long. Somewhere around there.

Thanks! I managed to find an 9' wide x 6' tall frosted shower curtain from amazon so I ordered (2). I also plan on ordering (2) of the projectors you posted as well. Amazon has a good price on these.
Did you play the videos direct from a USB or are you connected to a computer?
The projector I used last year would not read the USB correctly and had to go the computer route via HDMI.
9' really, can i get a link perchance?

i use the USB with a card reader. works really well. though i think ill be using my laptop eventually. Its a pretty decent projector for the price. only thing i just realized that i don't like is it doesn't have a head phone jack. Not a huge problem cause i can get an adapter that does the same thing but would be nice to have it all ready built in.

Sounds like your all in huh, If you have any more questions feel free to ask id be happy to help.
Sure thing. Here is the link:

Last year was my first real year doing a haunt, but it was a huge success even though I had very little props, etc. Rumor has gotten out that I am the "house" to visit.
