I have always loved the Pumpkin Sentinels I've seen everyone make on the forum and decided I needed one in our haunt. I have to thank GhostTown for the amazingly detailed "Ode de Pumpkinrot" tutorial. Here's what I came up with, thanks to all the inspiration I've seen on the forum.
Pumpkin form for paper mache. Made out of a pillow covered in garbage bags and strapped with tape. The vine attachment is a spool of solder wire, which was nice and heavy and made an indentation just like you'd see on the top of a pumpkin.
Seven layers of newspaper mache later and here's what I had. I cut open the rear of the pumpkin to pull out the pillow. Carved the jack-o-lantern face out with a knife. I covered the carved out face with painters tape because I filled the inside with great stuff foam to give the mache extra rigidity, and I didn't want it to leak out of the carved areas.
Great stuff interior. I just re-attached the cut out piece using more mache.
Sentinel body using PVC and 1/2" irrigation tubing for ribs. I also added a "spine" shape made from chicken wire scrap that I mached with paper towels.
Lucked out at the Home Depot reject paint table with a cheap gallon of the perfect orange paint!
The sentinel head is lit up using a small twist on led that fits in the base of the head where it attaches to the PVC neck.
And here is my Sentinel with his ghost friend, watching over the cemetery on Halloween night.
Love this!!! I started something similar last year but didn't begin to get it finished. I like how you put the spray foam in for rigidity... I used chicken wire as my frame and someone banged it up pretty bad.
He turned out just wonderful!!!! I have always loved pumpkin sentinels and yours is one of the best. Thanks for showing your steps.
I love the pic with his ghostie bud!
Thank you Nightfisher! I have to thank you for your tutorial on how you made your cemetery sign. I used it to make this one for our cemetery. Even my husband was impressed =)
