Prop gun

What is better/cheaper making your own gun or buying a prop one. I'm making a security guard and need him to have a heavy duty gun, but i don't want to waste too much money. Anyone have a good way to make one?

Ok, here's what you do. Go to Rite-Aid or Wallgreens, or Wal-Mart and get a $2 squirt gun pistol. They're usually translucent, colorful plastic.

Take the squirt gun home and paint it with oil-based modeling paints. You'll be surprised at how good it looks.

I made a couple prop guns a few years ago. I was able to buy a 9mm and a .45 style from Rite-Aid. Had some old modelling paints and went to town. For my guns, I actually filled them with sand to give them some weight.

Here is a pic of the 9mm prop pistols. (The .45s are in storage)
