Working on one of my final tricks for the year - to have a full-size version of the Star Wars Emperor appear, talk and then disappear.

Upon starting this project, I quickly discovered that there are no good movie shots of the Emperor head-on and full-body. So, back to the drawing board to make my own.

I started by finding some images online of the Emperor and settled on this picture of an actual model (bust-sized):

In Photoshop, I added a dress to him (yes - took a photo of a lady in her dress) and then used some filters to make him appear blue and ghosty.

I edited the sound from Return of the Jedi to remove Vader's voice and just have Mr. Palpatine speak. I quickly realized that oh no - the mouth doesn't move! To rectify this, I recorded my wife trying to talk like Bernie Sanders (to kick the jaw out and show some teeth). After about 5 takes and a ton of laughter, she kept her head perfectly still and we got a good recording. This was added to the video and my wife's mouth was masked over the Emperor model. Now the Emperor has a real "pretty mouth" as they say in the South.

Sorry, she won't let me post the out takes from those videos...

Now the mouth doesn't perfectly line up with audio, but that won't matter a night with this effect.

Using some black mosquito netting scrim - found at Hobby Lobby I began playing around the projector. In fact, there was lots of trial and error to get the brightness and angles down to make this look good.

Here's the details on the projector:

Meyoung Movie Projector HD Video Projector 1080P 1200 Lumens 150" for Movie Night,DVD Player, via USB/AV/SD Ports (GP70 Black) - SOLD ON AMAZON for $98.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01DJ3S1A0/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

This should have enough power to light up the scrim.

Given the Emperor is a tall figure, I opted to design the video horizontally and then tilt the projector. To get the scrim secured, I used some ping pong balls (wrapped the corners around them) with some fishing line. Can't see the scrim at all.

Used some supports of PVC and wood to hold the scrim out and tight

What a great idea, and while it sounds like a significant effort, it sure looks like it will have been worth it....can't have the Dark Side without the Emperor represented.

I'm really looking forward to the video of this year's display! :)
Hey Defenstrator - That's exactly right - it would be a miss if he weren't included. I had started looking at putting him up on the porch at first, but the throw was so short, he would have ended up tiny. This way he stands at full-size and should be somewhat ominous from the sidewalk. I picked up some $2 PC speakers from the second hand store, so the effect is now complete and ready for the big night!

Screw the video...I'm buying a plane ticket and flying my kid to North Carolina so we - I mean she - can trick or treat there.

I'm in awe over the Emperor hologram.
