Hi, all!

I've been lurking and reading the forum for over two years now, as I love Halloween and now I've got an extra special reason to post.

I'm getting married on Halloween 2017!

We're hoping to use an old local pub where the owner has always made a big effort (not particularly common in the UK), and it's already turning into more of a gig/festival/party than anything too conventional. And Wedding Forums scare the wotsits out of me more than any monsters :D

Anyhow,, the venue has an outside stage in a pretty garden, there's a pergola to wrap lights round and hang bats, ravens in cages & cobwebs from, and I have visions of the stage being covered in candles and lanterns whilst we and our friends perform (musicians), but I need ideas for everything, so I automatically (after the initial WOW! YES! WOW! Can we do it next Halloween? MUSIC! FRIENDS! WE'RE GETTING MARRIED!) thought of you guys.

The other thing is, as musicians, it's got to be inexpensive. We're generally two paychecks away from abject poverty. At some point, I suppose I've got to think about things like a dress, shoes and a bunch of flowers, seeing as we've already told everybody that fancy dress is welcomed/positively encouraged, but it's about Us, which means it's decorations, music and having a great time with our friends, rather than spending thousands and thousands of pounds we simply haven't got and won't get into debt for.

Please, help us plan the best Halloween Party EVER!

Oh, I just love weddings! I did most of the planning for 2 of my cousin's weddings, my sister's & my own! And I was a long-distance Maid of Honor (MoH) for my best friend too! So I'm happy to chime in with lots of thoughts.

Can you tell me more about what your style is? Do you want traditional dress for yourself & your groom, or do you want to involve Halloween or a darker feel at all?
How about telling me about the time of day - are you planning on having dinner & dessert for everyone, or just light appetizers & cocktails? How many people are you having? Will the pub close to the public on Halloween for you, or will there be other random people there as well as your guests? Will there be a way to keep your area separate? All things to consider!
In a perfect world, what would you eat, what would you do, what would you wear? You might have to scale back due to costs, but sometimes there's a way to incorporate things you love.

My best (generic) advice is for you & your fiance to each sit down & talk about what your financial priorities for the day are, and then compromise where you can. For example, my DH prioritized the food, and while that was important to me also, I did not want to skimp on a photographer. So, food/drink & photography were 2 of the places where we allotted a good bit of our budget. We had our ceremony, cocktails & reception at the same location to save money, and it allowed us to skip transportation for ourselves & the wedding party. It was a gorgeous B&B with a big barn, giant patio & separate reception spot, so we really were thrilled when we found it.

Congratulations! Hope to hear more details!

congrats & welcome to the forum!

I picture very Gothic, Vampire-ish, Phantom of the Opera. Lots of candles, candelabras, dark velvet, black roses.....

the good news is you have all year to gather. I would hit up all the after Halloween sales, thrift stores etc.

good luck!

Thank you!

I'm not into slasher type imagery, but like things a 'bit creepy' - the venue has a lovely garden with a stage, so I'm imagining it covered in candles/lanterns, with fairy lights and bats, with a generalised green/blue glow of lighting - I suppose it's a bit about nature, Grimm's Fairy Tales. Burton & New Orleans-y. If that helps, rather than confuse :) There is also the consideration that it could rain or be very windy (there is the main building, but I like the outdoors and doing the vows at night with the wind blowing a hooley rather appeals; which is just as well, as he grew up on the moors and we're hoping to move there in the next couple of years).

I can't imagine myself wearing a traditional wedding dress, nor something that looks like fancy dress. I can imagine his outfit more (although it's actually entirely up to him) - pinstriped suit with black converse. Knowing him, with a red tie or waiscoat/vest (I think that's what they're called in the US?) But he kinda looks a lot like Jack Skellington naturally, as he has long spidery legs and no hair... The idea of gloves/arm coverings like the Corpse Bride or Bride of Frankenstein appeal, though. And I do tend to have unusual colour hair - blue is one of the regular choices.

The budget is just as low as we can get it; I haven't got an engagement ring yet, but I'm looking at a silver one with a hare on it for abut £50, as money is really that tight. The venue is because it's cheap, they have facilities for live music & food and our friends can get there easily.

I never expected to be getting married and very few people we know have ever done it, so I've got no idea how to plan this. I can plan a gig for festival easily enough, but this is another level. And I won't be able to be running about with a clipboard on the day. Which is even scarier.
