Old barrel

I always wanted to make a barrel for my pirates, so last few days i've been looking to make one from mache, well it just didn't work out like I wanted, I had a small block of foam I found last year and figured I could use it, so I got the wood lathe out and wala, old pirate barrel. Now my wife wants me to make more!

Nice job! I like the aged look. I bet it's a whole lot lighter than my wooden barrels (100 lbs!).
Is this a wine barrel size or nail keg size?

Thanks Haunter, I wanted real barrels but the cost kept me from it, plus I wanted a cartoon look to it, its about a 5gal size.

What a great idea! The barrel looks great! Did you cut the foam with standard wood chisels? Did it cut easy or did you have to be careful not to allow the chisel bite in and rip out a large piece of foam?

Thanks all.

The Pod, I was afraid lathe tools would gouge the foam so I used a file to start with and sandpaper to finish, just took it easy so as not to rip or damage the foam.

That is the most incredible barrel I have ever seen!! Seriously, that is amazing. Makes me really wish I owned a lathe.

That barrel is perfection. I can see why your wife wants you to make more.

WOW!!! The last time my husband used his lathe he sent a 4x4 flying across the room when it came loose from the machine and I banned him from using that thing again...thanks to your idea he can pull it out once more
