I'm not sure if anyone heard about this but it is all over my neck of the woods.

Shocktoberfest, a haunt I have grown to love announced this year that haunters would have the option to go through a haunt in the nude, after hours, over 18 and if they sign a waiver.

As a long time haunter, I can’t help but roll my eyes and think “has it really come to this"?

http://www.shocktoberfest.com/

Now I’m far from a prude but I just can’t help but think this spells trouble. I’m assuming it will all be drunk, old guys attending, hoping to get an eyeful of topless girls. I don’t know how the establishment is going to manage control.

If I think about it: Haunted houses are held mainly in the dark. This leaves a BIG opportunity for groping of some type of assault. Heck, I’ve been groped in a haunt before with my clothes on. I’ll be very surprised if there are no incidents. I’m also unsure of what Shocktoberfest’s motivation is. I can understand the idea of being “naked and afraid” but I would be more afraid of the strangers and potential around me than the actual haunt. Unless they are only letting people go through in a group that they know. Again, many haunts just cattle shoot people through and you end up with a stranger screaming in your ear the whole time.

Hours ago because of all the controversy, Shocktoberfest made this announcement on facebook:

"To all of our supporters and customers,

When we designed The Naked and Scared Challenge, our goal was to bring you an experience like you have never seen before. We had no idea how quickly it would spread across the country and the world. ...It was the talk of countless morning radio shows, the Today Show, Jay Leno, CBS, NBC, ABC, FOX, AOL, Newspapers around the country, and abroad such as UK, Canada, Australia, and Scandinavia. In its original design, we were offering the “nude” or “prude” options. Although the Naked and Scared Challenge is legal, due to this worldwide attention, it has been requested by our township officials not of offer the “nude” option. Not wanting to engage in a battle with our municipalities we have decided to concede. We are still offering the “prude” option of going through the Unknown with nothing but your underwear. We still feel confident this experience will be very intense. In discussing this with Spring township officials, we may be able to offer the “nude” option next year. Stay tuned…

For any customer that has purchased the Naked and Scared Challenge that does not want to do the “prude” option, we are offering a full refund to your credit card. Simply email us at [email protected]"

So now it looks like underwear is required vs going totally nude.

Question of the day: Would you go through a haunted house naked? Personally, it is not for me. Only one guy gets to see me naked and I prefer to keep it that way!

Absolutely not. I almost hate the idea in itself. This world, the US in specific has enough corruption, negativity and evil in it w/o a naked haunted house. I have been seeing pornographic images of Disney characters lately online and that just disgusts me.

I'm totally not a prude either, but, gross. I feel like those 'experimental idealists' are just looking for 'amazing, new' ways to do things. But that's not amazing. That's just looking for trouble. Can you imagine the glitter, corn stalks or whatever-else props getting stuck in places that they shouldn't be stuck in:eek:

Personally, I think it's all about the publicity & they got it. I even heard about it down here in MD. I can't imagine doing it regardless of age, size or shape naked or just underwear. I wonder how many "naked" tickets they'd sold?

It sounds like one of those things that sounds good on paper but in reality it could be a mess.

But...I would've been interested to see how it turned out in the end if it'd happened. I wonder how long before the first naked pics would've ended up on the internet?

I could def see it as a mess. Probably law suits too from costumers getting too comfortable and touching.

Not for me, I'm afraid... If I went through a haunt in the altogether, I'd almost certainly be the scariest thing in there.

The sight of the old Baron looming out of the darkness with the Samedi family jewels on display would doubtless have even the most hardened scare actor undergoing counselling for the rest of their lives.

That being said, I don't think the operators of this haunt have any perverse or sexual motivation for this. Being naked in a dark and unfamiliar environment, facing unknown perceived threats and dangers is extremely unsettling. ( During my military service, I underwent a course of Resistance to Interrogation during which we were often stripped naked, blindfolded, and moved to various rooms). Being naked removes the subconscious protective barrier that clothing brings, leaving the person feeling extremely vulnerable. I believe it is that additional dimension of fear that they are trying to explore here.

I'm having a hard time understanding what the point is (besides publicity, of course). Is being nude meant to make one feel more vulnerable? I suppose in that way, it would enhance the haunted house experience, but how lame must the house be to have to resort to that?

Overwhelmingly, I'm thinking 'NO' on this. Bad idea from all angles.

They back out of doing it. The county would not issue them there permit with the "Naked and Scared Challenge". So they dropped it and are hoping to do it next year. Ha good luck with that.

Wow, there's now 4 or 5 threads on this stunt. It's obviously gotten everyone's attention...and while most people are thinking, "what??" I guarantee there are others going "ooo, great idea." I stand by my earlier statement - you're going to see this idea spread to other parts of the country. Sooner or later, some locality is going to let it happen.

Apparently, today the application for a business permit to run shocktoberfest was rejected by the municipality it was supposed to be in, all on the grounds of this idiotic stunt. Posted the news article in my own thread on the subject. lol

I agree with just about everybody. This is probably the worst idea anyone ever came up with. Okay, there's a certain helpless and defenseless aspect to being naked which goes along with a certain nightmarish quality -- who hasn't had the dream of suddenly realizing that you are the only naked person in a crowd? But think of it from the monster's point of view. I've worked Shipwreck at the Queen Mary (I think they call it Dark Harbor now) on the west coast and Halloween Horror Nights at Universal in Orlando. So I know what it's like dealing with drunks. But naked drunks? Holy crap! Talk about one giant, undulating moving lawsuit in the making. On a normal night you had to worry about accidentally touching somebody. Now you'd have to worry about accidentally looking at somebody the wrong way. And bam, right into court. That takes into account it even got that far, cause I picture every mother and and self-righteous bible-belter in the county marching on the park with torches and pitchforks. What a stupid concept. I can see where at least one event planner for this event is probably applying for unemployment about now.

This is just a publicity stunt that worked. How many naked customers do they really expect to get? They should spend more time improving their haunt rather than thinking up gimmicks for it.
Exactly, they are trying to make the customers be the exhibit, and exploiting them for the publicity.

I think you're right it's just a publicity stunt. However, I would like to watch the footage from the hidden IR cameras inside the haunt! :)

I think a scarier idea would be for the haunt to have naked scareactors. You know, naked Jason, naked Freddy, naked Michael, naked Dracula, naked Mummy (???) !
