I have a CNC router table, so I am experimenting with carving my own tombstones out of closed cell foam. This first test went wrong, because I use the wrong bit, but I just wanted to see if it was possible to do this. Now to find the right carving bit, and get to it!

Fess up ... how hard was it to clean up the dust? Or does the table have a dust collection system built into it?

That was my first thought ... I love that kind of foam and the detail you got is amazing. I just hate the dust and how staticy it is (staticky?).

It is still in the state you see in the photo. i have not gone back out to the wood shop to blow it off, or work with it further. i am thinking that a light spray mist of acetone or MEK might calm down the rough texture. I learned something though. My table carves according to GRADIENTS. So part of the roughness comes from the fact that the original photo was not a uniform color across the inscription area. Darker spots were carved deeper, even if they were just shadows.

I made these with a Dremel tool and a hand saw. Out of the green 3in insulation boards at Lowe's... very time consuming though.

I've seen the bigger cnc machines rough it out and then change to a finer bit and run slower to get more detail at the final stage.....ZR
