I am making an extra large outdoor pumpkin prop. I was thinking to use a yoga ball and cover it in paper mache. What would you suggest for the top coat to make it carvable, smooth and weather proof? I saw someone has used Great Stuff for a project like this, but i've heard it never stops expanding so you will get cracks in it. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

Great Stuff will stop expanding when it dries (usually after a few hours). Plus the cracks will give it the imperfections that all pumpkins generally have. What are you looking to do with this prop? Is it just a pumpkin or will it be some sort of creature (pumpkin sentinel)?

i would attach a rope to the top of the ball and hang it outside.
I would then start at the "stem" and work longitudinally from stem to butt, like a lines in a pumpkin.
Don't make it too thick, it will expand. Get a spray bottle with water and spray it to dry faster.
After drying, carve as needed, Cut rope (leaving a stem), the yoga ball will deflate if you cut a hole in it, you could remove it then or leave it.
Paint.

Thank you everyone for the tips and ideas on using Great Stuff and water proofing. I will try it out tonight along with the dry loc top coat.

Amazing pumpkin Zombie4*! I love it with the lighting. I can't wait to make mine. I am trying to make a large jack o lantern for my Jack Skellington to sit on.

Thanks again!
