I was looking for something to cast a large dinosaur image on our 2-story house's side wall when we set up for our dino haunt and can't wait to try out. It's 15W and hoping it will be bright enough to do what I want and still be creepy lighting. Just ordered it from Amazon. It's a set of plug-in, waterproof (IP66) LED flood lights. There are a number of remote controlled features including color, brightness and modes for this wall washer fixture and it's dimmable too. This product had thicker housing around the edges over other ones I looked at and thought would make it sturdier in the long run. Since it's set to deliver next week, I figure it has to be U.S. based shipping (hate when seller location isn't listed and then it comes from overseas after a few weeks).

Anyone with experience doing shadow castings using LED lighting? If so would love to see how you did your setup.

So...

I have a pair of these, and a local group I'm a member of has a BUNCH, so I'll relate my experience, but also note that to date, I'm the only one that's had such a bad one.

I bought them 2 years ago, used for Halloween no problems.

Used one of them in a Christmas display through December 2017. It got buried under snow and was picked up in February with no signs of water leaking in.

When I plugged them in for Halloween 2018, the one that had been used through December was a noticeably different color, and dimmer. To the point of being unusable for the flood at either corner of the yard plan I had for them.

So...I don't know if it was length of use difference, some kind of UV damage to the one out longer, water getting in, or what...but I have 2 very different lights now.

Neat lights. Lots of uses...but I'm not sure I'd buy them again. I need to run the 'good' one and see if it dims over time as well.

I have a whole bunch of these but they are slightly different and very possibly older designs. I use 10w versions to light a single tombstone, 20w to cast a shadow of a stone on a wall or uplight a tree and 50w versions to wash the 2-story wall of the house. I have had fairly good luck with them - they get left out in the rain for weeks during the season and then spend the rest of the year either baking or freezing in the attic. I have never had one go dim like Unorthodox but I have definitely had some that simply never turned on after resting a year. To me they are worth it because of the ability to change colors or you can even set them in a mode where they will slowly change colors.

Wow glad to see feedback on these. When I asked I thought I'd be lucky to find even one person who had them. The reviews on Amazon seemed pretty good and for those few I read that had a problem with them the company made good on them from all accounts. UnOrthodOx did you contact them about replacing at all?

Felt for the price it wasn't much of a gamble although I guess I'll see if the 15W will be sufficient for what I have in mind. I could use both of the lights on the small dino image if that helps in any way. I'm planning on using the outlet I have on my bbq island (has a waterproof cover--code) so if we get some rain I should be good to go regardless. The house wall from the bbq island isn't too far, to our fence I think 17 feet and less from the bbq island. They have a decent size cord so even if I need to move them back to hang on the fence I hope the distance will be sufficient to get a decent huge dino shadow out of it.

Worse case, I use these for some other lighting and pick up a stronger wattage one.

Crap, just checked on my order and saw that when I had cancelled my order so I could add something to it to get free shipping I re-inputted the order and clicked on the wrong item and didn't notice. Ended up ordering the 30W blue lights instead of the 15W RBG ones. They were the same price for 2. These blue lights don't have a remote and probably only plug in as On, don't see mention of a switch. Blue is still spooky I guess and certainly would work in other haunt scenes just disappointed in myself for not looking over my order before submitting. The higher wattage should cast a more defined shadow. When they arrive I'll post a photo of their use at night on our house wall so you can see how much light 30W casts in my case.

Amazon is REALLY good with returns. I returned something last year, got an RMA # online with return label. They issued the refund the next day before they even received the return.

I purchased five of the RGB 10 Watt versions from another company when they were on sale. They all work really well, but I have to admit upon reflection, I will probably buy single color lights going forward. I really wanted purple lights in some places of the yard, and the RGB gave me that option. But as I look at all the other spots of the yard I want to light, blue, green, and yellow are the colors I intend to use. The difference in cost between RGBs with remotes and static color lights is pretty amazing. So if you know what color you want in a location, buying that color along with your RGBs isn't such a bad idea. All our lights are on a single timer, so I don't actually have to go out every night with the remote and turn them on and off.

I didn't get them directly, it was part of a group buy situation. Coupled with the several months of being in the weather, I figured it wasn't worth the hassle. I believe mine are the 15W version.

I received the blue 30W lights the other day and only had the chance to plug them in to see if they worked. They do and pretty bright in a small room. And this brand at least is quite heavy and solid. Looks like nice construction. Hope to get a chance one night this weekend to try out using as a house wall shadow-caster source and will post a photo then. As anticipated with this blue light fixture, it only has a cord to plug in and no on/off switch. Guess I could put it on a remote timer as Chubstuff did but like the idea of just having the plug inside the weatherproof outlet box and keeping the plug nice and dry. Never know what kind of weather we'll have come end of October.

Over the years I've bought a bunch of different colored, mostly solid color, Gemmy spot lights for use around the house to highlight props. Great depth of color but since they are round the shadow cast is round too. With my dino projection felt I needed something more fitting of it's shape and these rectangular lights hopefully will provide a better wall wash.

While I'm not sure it will solve your dilemma, it might be that you need to step away from flood lights and actually buy yourself a spot light. The narrower focus of a spotlight will cast a darker shadow, and if your T-Rex is as far away from your house as it seems, that extra focus of the light will still spread out so that you get less of a spot light look. We use spotlights everywhere we want to cast a shadow, and use the LED floodlights for broader swaths of color in the graveyard. However, all of our spots are smaller versions that cast shadows usually less than ten feet away. Your success might vary depending on distance, angle, and all those other factors we're not taking into consideration.
