hey tj, the way I change my avatar is : go to your profile page (click on your name and it'll take you there), then look on right side. click on 'edit friends list'. when next page comes up, look on left side under 'settings & options'. will have a place to edit your avatar. good luck. hollar if you need help. 
p.s.- when you click on your name , the drop box comes up, hit 'view public profile'
I'm sure there is a much easier way to do all this!!
