Happy New Year to everyone on our Halloween Forum,
Can you believe that it is only 289 more Days until Halloween 2019?
Before you know it, it will be here and Gone.
Well.....may be not that quickly, but.....Time sure seems to be Flying as we all get older.
Ok......sooooo I am really really really needing everyones Help and Advice when it comes to my 1977 Cadillac Hearse.
I found this thing, about a month ago now, and have really not done much to her at all, since our weather has been anything but great.
To date, I have Bought her.....and moved her out of the Skid Road area where I found her on a Movie set.
When I was negotiating to buy her, the previous owner told me all kinds of stuff about her, but.....what Seller doesn't do that?
He told me that she runs and she stops and she moves and she drives just fine.
I was skeptical, having been Stung a few times in my life....with BS, but.....what can one really expect, when it comes to buying an Old Hearse, that has not seen much Love, since her retirement.
It was definitely NOT Love, at First Sight....but she is slowly growing on me, just as all the Moss and Slime has been growing on her. lol
I had her towed to where she is now, I did not even try to start her, as I just never had the time to play with her due to the Holiday season and our ****ty weather.
When I bought her, she was coved in Leaves and Twigs and Tree slime and her Front right tire was Flatter than Flat.
Her insides were covered in Mouse crap and her Bench seat, was something that you would never consider sitting on, until.....you had Disinfected it, a zillion times over and over again.
Her Coffin area was fairly clean.....aside from the Mouse crap and a few Crack Pipes left behind from the Street people that used her for ......well......I'll let your imagination run Wild on that one.
The picture I am painting of her, is pretty well bang on.......and she CREEPED ME OUT.....just to even open her Doors.
Each and every time I went to check on her, I did a little bit here and there.....to the point.....that I am now.....Totally OK with her.
I have cleaned her insides as best and as often as I could......with every Disinfectant known to Man, and then some New Ones just invented by NASA.
I am no longer Creeped out by her, and I think that she looks forward to see me now, as much as I look forward to seeing her.
I jacked her up, and Fixed her Flat front tire, and I have cleaned her Engine bay, which was absolutely Filthy.
I then.....stuck a charged up Battery in her, I poured some New Gas into her Tank, and sprayed a little Starting Fluid into her Carb, and turned the key, while closing my eyes and hoping for the best.
She jumped to Life!
She RUNS......LOUD and Proud....well.....more "LOUD" than Proud that is.
She has her Twin exhaust......without Mufflers on them......coming out.....on each side, underneath the side doors......on a 45 degree angle.....HOT ROD Style......and her 425 Cubic inch engine.....just ROARS......when you Rev her up.
I haven't driven her yet....but.....I did go through her Gears.....and it seems as if.....her Tranny works? lol
The Head Lights work.....her Tail lights work.....and her Turn signals work for the most part.
Her Wipers work...well they did on the weekend, but....they were struggling this morning, when I tried them out.
They could have been Frozen?
I am still leary about sitting on that seat, so for now.....I put a big Thick cozy Blanket on it, till the weather warms up and I can take a Power Washer to that seat.
You get the Picture of what I have here......I have an OLD HEARSE......Not a Show Car....Not a Collectors car.....But.....a Halloween Prop.
I was originally happy to just have a something that looked like a Hearse...but...now.....I am wanting to get her looking better, than when I first found her.
Here is where I need your Help.
She has a really Ugly look to her right now.
She has some Moss growing on her.....she has that Green Film or slime growing on her Roof......her Paint is Flat Black in colour, with lots of Patina going on, amongst her other tree slime.
Have a look at some of the pictures and you will see what I mean.
I was originally wanting this Mossy LOOK.........but....when it is Dark Outside, that LOOK....will be totally Lost in the Night, as she will have way to much to look at, besides how she Looks in the Day Time.
So.....I am torn as to what to do with her?
Do I leave her untouched for the next 8 Months, in her Barn Find condition.....and never ever take any soap or water to her....or take any Polish to her.......or......My Gut feeling is to .....Wash Her and Detail her and Clean her right up.
She has Cadillac Wire wheels on her, and those are starting to look really good, and her White Walls will clean right up as well..... as I have already begun working on those.
Her Chrome all looks to be in pretty good shape........and Im thinking......that her Chrome gleaming....up against her Flat Back paint, will look just as good.....as if I left her covered in all of that Tree Slime and Moss.
The Police tend to leave Vehicles alone, that LOOK as if , they are in decent Road Shape.
By driving around in a Moss Covered Twig Covered OLD Hearse.....that just might attract the Wrong kind of Attention.
It is a HEARSE!!!!!
Whether it is a CLEAN Hearse or a Moss Covered Hearse.......it is still a Hearse......and it will CREEP OUT most people regardless of it being CLEAN and Detailed or whether she is a Mess.
I am leaning towards Cleaning her Up.....and making her LOOK...as good as she can, with a little LOVE and lots of Attention.
If.....I had some property, I would leave her Moss Covered and bring her out, just once year, looking worse than the year before.
Sadly, I live in the City.......and I think.....that Cleaning her up.....might be the way to go.
I will have a Coffin in her, and if the weather is Clear, I will have another one.....Leaning out of her Back Door and one up on the Roof....and what with Green LEDS Flickering on her Insides......and a Fog Machine blowing out Fog......being Covered in Moss.....will not even be noticed.
So.....what does everyone think?
Do I leave her all covered in Green Moss and Tree Slime.....or.....Do I make her Look as good as I can, with LOTS of elbow grease and Lots of LOVE, for Architecture Road Street Art Car

cool find!
I'd clean her up, fix the exhaust and get her as roadworthy as possible. Then you can proudly drive the family around on a pleasant Sunday afternoon. :)

Even beautifully clean, as a Halloween static display it should look awesome. Coffin in the back, maybe a skeleton driver...
What does it say on her window?

I kinda dig the old mossy look she's got but if you want her clean I'd start ASAP. Eight months from now will mean just 8 more months of garbage to get off of her. You could leave it mossy if you had the right lighting & placed in the right spot.

I'd also look into your local laws & zoning. I know that in our town & county it's illegal to have an untagged or unregistered car just sitting around. If it's in a garage or covered, it's fine, but if I had your hearse without tags or say it's original owners tags I may be ticketed & it may be towed if left in the wrong spot. Granted some jurisdictions are more lax about that stuff, but it's still illegal where I live. My guess is it's one of those laws to keep some folks from starting a junk yard in your nice suburban neighborhood.

So to be on the safe side check around because it would be the worst to wake up one morning & see it covered in tickets or gone because it got towed.

Maybe I'll be of some help to you since I happen to own 1977 Cadillac Hearse, and I happen to be an auto mechanic as well. Mine is white though, but bought her under similar conditions. Very neglicted, moldy, sat for sometime. In my case the owner was selling because it stopped running and then he let it sit..... It needed a battery and gas. Had to rebuild the transmission not long after getting her, and ours had a lot of rot under the vinyl. That's a big issue with hearses. I did end up fixing the roof eventually and getting new vinyl, but she's defiantely not restored or anything like that. More like a driver. Runs good, drives good, not afraid to drive her in the rain.

Back to your hearse. I'm a little late on this but as you continue to clean don't forget to be careful around rodent droppings. If dealing with dry droppings wet them down before removing so that stuff doesn't get air borne. Before you run it much change the engine oil. Make sure the brakes work and then try to drive it. You'll get a much better idea of it's condition once you've driven it some. If it were me I'd wash it. Looking at the pictures the paint probably isn't all that great, but getting the moss off and dirt off will slow the deteriouration of the paint and body. If you really want the mossy look I'd still wash it and then paint the mossy look onto it. It might not be quite as realistic, but it would be better for the metal. Plus when you're washing the top you may find a leak or two, and you should be able to tell if there is rust under the vinyl (would feel like some spots are softer than others, or you might hear crunching sounds). I guess it all depends on what you want to get out of the hearse, but if it were me I'd want to be able to drive it around, at least a bit.

I think that if you wash and clean her up she will be much happier with you.
Thanks for all the replies,
I have decided, that I'm going to clean her up.
I was, really torn between what I would like to see, and what her perception would be, if the Police were to see her cruising down the Freeway, in her present or even worse looking condition.
I am going to be cleaning her right up and detailing her, and even after doing all of that, because of her Patina that is already on her, she will look Great.
Halloween is all about being Dark and Spooky.....and in the Dark of the Night, No One....would ever notice her Mossy Roof or the Tree Slime that is presently on her.
What people will notice foremost, is that she is an Old Hearse, which is Creepy enough as it is.
The Green LED lights that I will be installing " Underneath" her ( They are dirt cheap off of Ebay) and that will run the Full lenght of her Frame and in the front and back, will Illuminate the Ground and the surrounding area around her......THAT.....will give her that Spooky Look, as she sits out on the street in front of our House.
I will also install some Green Flickering LEDs on the inside of her as well, in the back, along with a Coffin.
My plan is to also put a small Fog machine in the back of her.....sooooo that Fog is creeping out of her doors and slightly cracked open windows, weather permitting.
I highly doubt, that anyone is ever going to notice or miss the fact, that she is not covered in the original Moss or in her Tree slime.
We Haunters, are the only ones, who would appreciate that much attention to detail and to originality.
I do feel kind of bad, about cleaning her up in a way, but it is for the best, in this case.
As far as Tags go, she happens to be Fully Insured and Plated, as of now.....she has been stored just out on the street.
Thankfully, I have found a place to store her, till October.....( Paid storage of course ) ....which will let me take the expensive insurance off of her, and reduce my Monthly cost on her, down to just $50 per month for storing her, not all that far away from us.
We spend more than $50 per month at Starbucks, sooooo.......the cost of Storage is not that big of a deal.
So....I'll be working on her, once our Spring weather gets here, and I am really looking forward to adding my own Touch to her.
My head is full of some really cool touches, that will make her Stand Out more, than just the moss would.
If you have any suggestions on what you would do, I would Love to hear them all.
Did I mention that I bought her "DIRT CHEAP", which allows me to still put some money into her, without breaking the Bank, and not being able to recoup my Investment, when it comes time to sell her.
She is just a Halloween Prop, she is not going to be our Daily Driver.
Yes.....it will be Fun to drive her around a bit, during the Month of October....but....aside from that, she is going to be Parked and Stored , for the other 11 Months of the year.
I spent a little time last weekend, cleaning up her wheels a bit.....and for not having any water available, they are starting to come around.
Check out her Whitewalls.
I'm hoping to move her this weekend to her new home, and on the way, I will be stopping off at the Car Wash, so that I can take the Power Washer to her engine bay and to her entire body.
Yup.....She will be a lot Happier, being all Cleaned Up.....and looking all Hot and Automotive exterior Vehicle Car Vehicle door Bumper
Sexy again!
PS....For some reason, I am not able to rotate the picture?
It looks fine in its File, but the moment that I attach it, it comes out Vertical as opposed to being Horizontal?

You can also run it in any Halloween parade.
Halloween Parade?
Not sure where you live?.....But.....If we had such a thing, I'd be there in a Flash!
We happen to live in the Pacific North West, and Halloween around these parts, is not celebrated in that Fashion, in any parts of the PNW...that I am aware of.
Hey.....nothing against "Legal" Immigration at all, but.....with an ever increasing Immigration, comes a changing Culture along with it.
We here, are from a culture that embrasses the traditions of Christmas and Halloween and Valentines Day and St Patricks Day and Easter etc.......What with an ever changing demographics of people, our Traditions are so very slowly slowly Fading away, right before our eyes.
Now.....with the Snowflake generation being more concerned about the Hurting other peoples Feelings, and the Snowflakes being more concerned about protecting the ever changing and fabricated RIGHTS of each and every other Culture but "OUR OWN"......things like a Halloween Parade, is the last thing that this Generation will ever support.
Last Halloween, we had our Haunt put on HOLD......due to some New Asian neighbour.......being Totally Freaked Out, by Halloween.
Out of nothing but SPITE.......their Fear of Halloween, was the Catalyst that made me want to buy the Hearse for this years Halloween.
If the Hearse.....Frigging Creeps me out....I can hardly wait, to see what their reaction is going to be! lol
Come to think of it.........while growing up ( Not that I will ever do that!!! ) and during my entire life to date....I have never either heard of or ever seen....a Halloween Parade ever taking place in our city or on the out lining communities.
If there was, for sure we would have the Hearse in that Parade.
If you live in such a town, that hosts a Halloween Parade.....How Cool is that!
Sorry to say, that it is just a fight to do our Haunt each and every year, due to the fact....that someones Feelings might be Hurt. lol
Our Traditions are slowly being taken away from us, due.......to the New Snowflake generation.
Soooooo SAD to see and witness.

You do realise that you're the only one whining like a snowflake, right? As I said before, all the traditions you're complaining about being destroyed by other cultures were stolen from other cultures in the first place.
I'll take a wild stab at it here, but my guess would be, that you are not a huge supporter of Trump? lol
Lets just agree to disagree.
If you agree to quit *****ing about immigrants ruining your fun.
OK kids, this is why we can't have nice things.

So if this line of conversation continues this thread may be shut down & if this type of talk continues in any thread here you may be banned.

Since we all want to see the process of this hearse being "reborn" I'd suggest we keep things on track.

Now I still want to know what words are on the window of the hearse. My guess is the name of the funeral home that owned it but I'd still like to know.

Not sure what part of the PNW your in we're near Seattle and I agree it's NOT the greatest for Halloween fun. We moved to the area back when the Tylenol scare happened so my kids never got to have the joy of ToTing that I did as a child, not that I didn't want to take them as much as no one was into Halloween here. Schools slowly did away with Halloween for Harvest Festivals. ToTing was in Malls.

Fast forward a lot of years and we'd end up spending many Halloweens in the Portland area as they had more and better haunts then anything local. I met and got to know a number of the Portland area pro and home haunters during that time. After all the Portland slogan is Keep Portland Weird. The East Coast Haunter's convention is held annually in May in Portland haven't been in a while but you can look them up on the net. In the past they have saved space out near the vendor's door for the hearses to be parked.

There is a group again out of Portland called the coffin cruisers, a hearse club. They are on facebook.

The town of Bucoda, ( Boo-coda) WA - south of Olympia has a BIG Halloween thing, read that this past season they had a hearse parade as part of the festivities. Since we're not planning on a big Halloween thing this year we're going to try to get down there.

We bring our Hearse, named Spirit Quest, out to our town's Chamber of Commerce's trick or treat. We're given a great spot in the middle of town. It's amazing how many people have never seen a real hearse before and assume we're in the business.

Sorry you had you put your haunt on hold because of a neighbor. We've been lucky that we live out of town and don't have a HOA so can pretty much do as we please. We've been lucky in that our few neighbors enjoy what we do and many had kids the same age as mine so Halloween sort of grew on everyone over time. Kids are long gone but a number of the parents like us are still in the area and have gotten use to our decor in fact the newer homes that have gone in have started to deck out their places some for the holidays. For the past few years since Frog purchased the hearse it gets parked with a red light shinning on it in front of our little cemetery.

Here's Spirit with the new red curtains Frog's mom made for her 2 years ago and before her new rag top. Yes the she came with the coffin and it too is real, but in need of some new interior fabric.

Maybe we'll get an answer a little photo enlarging on my part makes it look like "?" 4 restoration.

The little sign in Spirit's window says FightFest NorthWest. After her retirement she was purchased by the founders of the group and brought up to Portland from Texas. Over the years she has been sold and resold within the group each doing less and less for her upkeep. The group disbanded several years ago for reasons I won't get into but to say it was ugly and so this is why we can't have nice things.

As Frog mentioned the last person to have her had no knowledge of even basic car care, wanted the hearse to just say I have a hearse and nearly killed her, to this day I believe Spirit used her last breath to make it from Portland to home a 4 hour drive. At about the Mount St Helen's exit Frog actually had wisps of smoke coming from the steering column. I shake my head and ponder how the heck did we get her home. While she will never be a "show" car, she is cared for. Frog has done basic engine work, had the tranny rebuild. His mom a better seamstress then me made new window curtains. Cleared out all the leaves twigs, nuts, rodent droppings and the dehydrated rodent we found in the under deck storage compartment. After sitting in a sopping seat once too many times Frog took off the vinyl and found rust had completely eaten around the front window. Getting out the glass it cracked and it took WEEKS and weeks to find new glass and get it installed. Frog managed to do some great body work over all the rusted out areas or so said both the glass guy and the vinyl guy when he redid the roof. Frog also had the vinyl guy respring the front seats as there were BIG divets in the seats where there once were springs, so now we can see over the dash. We hoping this summer to save enough to get her some new paint so she matches... some of the paint used over the body work to fix the rust wasn't covered by the new vinyl. Not sure if one of the coach lights just needs a bulb or rewiring so that's on our list to check out. But all in all in the few years we've had her she's in the best shape she's been in a long time.

Hey there RCIAG,
LOL......Thanks for stopping me from being Barred for Life! LOL
Some times , a GUY, just needs to put the School Yard Bully, in his place, even if it means....getting kicking out of school, for doing it! LMAO
OK......Moving on Folks, brings us to the name that is on the side Window of our Hearse.
Well......its says ......"Attitude4Destruction" and no.....it is not the name of a Funeral Home.....it is the name of a fictional Heavy Metal Band, that was portrayed in a Movie, that our Hearse was involved in.
Its kind of a Cool Name actually, when you now know.....that it was the name of a Rock Band.
They used the Hearse for transporting their equipment from gig to gig.
We had 3 New Large decals made up, to replace the Attitude4Destruction decal......and of course, the decal says......"Myra Mains Funeral Home" - "You come to us"!
We will have one decal on each Rear side window.......and One decal going across the Back Door glass.
Its the little details, that makes any vehicle....Yours!

"Attitude4Destruction" ...sounds like a good name for a Guns N Roses cover band. I kinda like that. Your name is better though!

First, let me say this is the coolest hearse I have EVER SEEN! I think she would look fabulous all cleaned up but leave some of the moss and slime in some places. We love creating Halloween decorations that at first glance, look elegant but when you look closer, there’s decay or a blood stain, you get the idea.
You might want to check out an episode of the TV show, “Fantomworks”. About 2 years ago the garage restored an old hearse that belonged to two Halloween enthusiasts. Of course, their creation was over the top and cost a fortune BUT they did 2 things that were awesome and may not cost that much.
They installed green l.e.d. lights on the undercarriage. Very creepy in the dark and would probably would emit enough light to make the some of the details hearse more visible. Probably would look great with your fog machine.
The other thing they did was rig the exhaust pipes with spark plugs. When the motor is gunned, fire comes out of the pipes. (Fabulous way to announce your arrival at a Halloween party)
They accomplished this by modifying the exhaust pipes. My husband is the ultimate car guy and he says it’s not expensive to do, (famous last words) and you can find YouTube videos on how to do it. It’s an old hot rodders trick. They even make kits to make it even easier. I don’t know what your budget is, (mine is always out of control, I spent a ridiculous amount of money on two real crows from a taxidermist). I save all year for Halloween decorations.
The kits are called, “Flame Thrower Kits” They are available on Amazon from about $200.00 for a duel exhaust kit.
No matter what you do, I’m sure it will look great. Good luck and I am totally jealous!

Heyo new hearse owner! I, too, own a 1976 Hearse. Here's a couple of thoughts for you, that will save you money in the long run. 1. Consider getting Collectors Plates for her, when the current ones expire. Your car is now over 35 years old, and that qualifies it. You pay ONE TIME for the plate/license, and it's good forever. Washington does NOT have any qualifications (besides age) or restrictions, but you should check with your DOL . 2. I pay less than $200 A YEAR for my VALUE Coverage (mine is insured for $10k). There are several Collector and Antique Car Insurance companies out there. Do a little research, as some DO have restrictions on how many miles driven per year, or distance.
As far as cleaning her up: ABSOLUTELY DO! There are several ways to remove moss and pitch (check Pinterest), and you need to do this before the gunk totally ruins the paint any further.
Don't power wash the seat! It's foam, and all that mouse Sh*t will just dissolve and soak into the cushion, and don 't forget - where there's feces, there's urine as well. Use an upholstery cleaning machine and fairly strong dis-disinfectant, but make sure to vacuum it up as your're cleaning. Do this for ALL interior surfaces, and, don't forget - if there's Mouse droppings visible, it means there are droppings in the HEATING and AIR CONDITIONING ducts and filters as well. Get a good air compressor, a long length of rubber tubing and BLAST THEM ALL OUT (carefully). Use Alcohol to Disinfect any smooth surfaces (dash, door panels, etc).
I had another car (combination rig) that sat in a BARN (tarp covered) for 14 years! We took the time to do all the above, and she came out looking fairly good!
OH! Don't forget to drive in to a Jiffy Lube or Firestone, and ask them to inspect all the brake lines (metal and rubber) and gas lines (both intake and RETURN)! We ended up having to replace nearly all of them, especially the rubber brake lines at the cylinders.
A good "Fluid flush and fill" isn't a bad idea, either.
GOOD LUCK! And happy Driving!

Hi there Cafitzgerald,
Thanks for the Tip on the Fantom works show......I'll check it out, and see if I can find it on You Tube.
There is another show out there called......."Speed Outlaws" or something like that, and they also do an Old Hearse.
These guys ( Total Loveable ********! lol ) put a Front Seat into it, where the Driver and the Passenger are Totally Invisible, as they Drive down the Road, LOL.... and they also drive through a "Drive Through" Burger joint and Scare the heck out of the Girls at the Pick Up counter......its absolutely Hilarious!
They designed a seat, that they actually sitting on, BUT.....they are hidden behind the Upholstery.....and the Head Rests, are designed to go over their heads.
Please You Tube it, and I guarantee, that you will all being Laughing your *** off!
They also have a Smoke Machine mounted in the back of it, sooooo....when they are driving down the road....they hit the switch and BIG Black Smoke billows out of the back of it!
Its soooooooooooo FUNNY to see and to watch!
Yes....I will also be putting ground effect lights on my Hearse.
Green seems to work the best for the effect that I am wanting.....and I will install them, underneath the frame.....on Both sides and Full Length of the Hearse, in both sides.
LED Lights are really Cheap to do.
I will also be putting them on the inside.
I already have the Flame Throwers installed on the Hearse.
The Hearse was used for a Movie and the guys installed the Spark Plugs into both of the Pipes.
You just Rev it up.....Take your Foot off the Gas Pedal and flick the Switch to the Spark Plugs and the Gas that is collected in the Pipes......Ignites!
Its a very simple thing to do......they just have another Coil mounted under the Hood.....and the Tail Pipe Spark Plugs are connected to that additional Coil.
Yup.....you just Rev her up.....fill the Exhaust pipes with Fumes......and then you just flick the toggle switch that goes to the Coil.....and "BOOM" you have a Flame Thrower! lol
So I am lucky, that the guys who owned the Hearse before me, did a few little tricks to her.....not many ...but.....I will be doing a lot more to her, to make her that much more Unique....its like anything.....You are always wanting to put your own Stamp of Style ....on what ever it is that we all do.
Thanks for the Compliments on "Myra".......I am sure that she will be very Flattered. lol
But......go and have a look at the You Tube video on "Speed Outlaws" Old Hearse......its Hilarious!
