Hi All! I'm new here- I decided to sign up because I made my first Halloween scene this year and had such a great time. Now I'm already thinking about next year... I want to do a Pirates of the Caribbean scene from The Curse of the Black Pearl, specifically the treasure cave scene. I would like to create a walk through type experience and I'm wondering if anyone has ideas on how to build or simulate a cave environment that would be structurally sound? I'm working with a long skinny driveway which is up against the side of the house with a small garage at the end and a strip of lawn on the other side.

I'm wondering how to (if possible):

1.) Make a cave structure or simulate a cave environment

2.) Build onto the side of the house (it has wood panels, not stucco finish) a cave texture (rocks, stalagmites, etc) that wouldn't be damaging to the wood/paint too much (not sure if that can be done but we'll see)!

3.) Create giant mounds to paint and texturize to put treasure on like in the movie

Any ideas? I've got a few but still working on the feasibility... Thank you in advance!

Hi there,
Im not an experienced prop maker but I do love to challenge myself lol
I made a quick search and I came up with these helpful links. Some of the members form this website have done an awesome job at creating caves. You might want to ask them. Hopefully they will give you some helpful hints.

Pop up tailgate tents with curtain walls have grown to be my best friend when it comes to walk throughs. They take up little storage room, are structurally sound, easy to decorate can easily change the path layout when linking multiples, and you and you can section them off to double up on adding walk-through distance. Just using two tents would make a quick walk-through to a "room" with a separate exit.
You can create a cave entrance out of foam sheets and then focus the rest of of the decor inside.
I'd use Yoga mats from $5 below as a foundation for cave texture....from here you can mold stalactites and stalagmite s then texture with spray foam and paint.
This method would be light, safe, storage friendly and cost effective (the important things I keep in mind when prop building.

I think if you were to buy some cheap Gazebos to make the roof of the structure then purchase some Spray expanding foam. Spray the foam over the constructed gazebo, create lots of lumps and bumps then spray paint it.

If you purchase some camo netting (but without the net) you could attach it to the legs and ceiling to simulate sea weed.

Welcome to the deep end!! Don’t mean to pressure you but if you hit the home centers and Wal-Mart/target they’re in the death throws of Halloween discounts so I’d literally rush out and see if you can get some prop materials.
YouTube will be your best friend this year as well as Pinterest. In addition to this forum many of the contributors have their own channels. Tutorials from simple to simply outrageous are all over. You will amaze yourself with what you can create with some foam, some paint, some glue, and some luck and magic.
Don’t be afraid to screw up. Anything broken becomes something beautiful with a little glue, a lot of paint, and the right lighting.
Come to think of it I think I’ve gotten into relationships using that advice: so take it with caution.
Good luck. Take it all, give nothing back!
