Help with crypt , mausoleum plans

4406 Views 7 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  alucard
Hello,

I am in the planning stages for a crypt or mausoleum for my cemetery. It will stand in the background of my display so I do not necessarily need to build a full structure but maybe a two sided facade would suffice. I am struggling with the dimensions. Maybe 8 ft tall, 7 ft wide with a 42" wide door. Does anyone have any pictures or links of one in this size range.
I plan on using foam board with the appearance of old granite or aged sandstone.
Any help and or ides would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Todd

Use the search feature at the top right and search for "crypt" or "mausoleum". THere are quite a few folks that have done those projects and a few that are working on them for this year I believe. Some foam walls, some wood...

I'd start there.
I am very happy with my mausoleum. Here is a link to my PDF Tutorial.

My personal opinion is to first decide what would be the smallest size door that would work for your height and width, remembering that if a prop is to be put in the doorway, they tend to be a bit shorter than the average real person. Once the door size is established you can design to be proportionate to the doorway. I recommend using steel studs, they are easy to work with, inexpensive, but mainly because they won't warp. Consider using foam routered and or carved to replicate stone with panels placed horrizontally so the joint in the pieces of foam can be hidden in the routered joints of the stone. Another option is vacuformed panels that you can buy. Either option I would velcro onto the studs. Check out link.

I have a tutorial up on my crypt at:

Piney Hills Home Page

Just click on the How To's link and you'll find it.

I also have some pics up at my profile page:

Good luck and be sure to post pics when you're finished!
Thank you for the replies. They all helped with the design considerations.
I got started today and it"s coming along. I was trying to go full size and right now the front facade is about 9ft tall by 7ft wide.
The door is 76" by 46". This thing seems massive in the garage.
I'm working on some neat "windows" using round rings of PVC , now I need to figure out what adhesive will bond them together ( outside ring to outside ring)
