Howdy!

Thought I'd sign up here to see if anyone has any advice for a costume idea I'm working on, rather than just blunder on by my myself.

This year I'm planning to dress as Sutter Cane, from In The Mouth of Madness, specifically the scene below.

Most of the costume is pretty simple, but I want to have it look like I've torn half the face off with a black void behind it. The idea is to get half/quarter of a rubber face mask and have it hanging off my face with black makeup behind it but I'm not sure about how to attach it. I was thinking of using liquid latex to glue half of it to my face and leave the other half dangling, but I'm not sure that would be strong enough to hold it on. Does anyone on here have any ideas?

Cheers!

Latex is pretty strong - I know it's a bugger to peel off when I've done zombie prosthetics. I can only suggest that you do a trial run and see how it goes. Spirit gum would probably work better though? Not sure how well it would stick to the mask material.

for the part that needs to be attached, definitely Spirit gum over latex. The latex will heat up quicker over the evening, stretch and peel off. Tesco do a pack with gum and remover for a couple of £s, while you're there, pick up a pack of Pritt Glue Dots, the non marking, non permenant ones. Clump a few together and use to hold your tearable part of your face on until you tear it off and leave it dangling!! :D

The dots are like a blob of gel glue work really well to temporary hold things to skin, we've used them on wrist Corsages and holding tattoo sleeves up!

Well, my first practice for this with a cheap rubber mask worked quite well. Only using liquid latex held on very well, to the point that I had to peal it off so I could eat lunch. Which reminds me that on the final mask i'll have to make sure the eye and mouth line up properly...

I see Poundland have a little packet of spirit gum and remover in one of their makeup kits. I might use that to stick the top end of the glue area then use liquid latex on the rest.
