HELP ! Dogs destroy outside decorations

2038 Views 15 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  Blarghity
Last year I didn't decorate at all due to the fact that we live where there are from 5 to 10 dogs that tear everything up.All year I have junk in my yard from them tearing up other neighbors yards. What I would like to know is if anyone has ideas for props that the dogs can not get to or are unable to tear them up.
I have 3 inside dogs and 2 outside dogs and they were taught not to tear things up .I can leave them alone and come home to the house just as I left it .Same if I leave them outside.I love Halloween and really hate it when I cant decorate outside
any Ideas ?

Call animal control? That is my best suggestion if this happens on a regular basis.

thanks for the fast reply Garthgoyle ..we live in the country even though it has grown populated they have no animal control .I have called the police and they said nothing could be done unless I catch the animals and have proof then I could file a charge , we will be fencing in a large portion oh our land( we have almost 8 acres with 3 in blueberries) but we have to save up a bit .I love animals but I love the owners less
JLWII2000 I never thought of that ,it is defiantly wort a try thanks :D

No problem, if you are considering that item I would quickly come to a decision as it's 40% off this week according to their website.
Halloweenfeend, if you have trees in your yard you can decorate them with hanging bats, spanish moss (creepy cloth), various lights. If they are close enough to each other you can run a flying ghost line between them. Most of this stuff can come in battery-operated form. If you lay out electrical cables will they try chewing thru those?

By all means you can still decorate your house, either inside with props looking out and colored lighting, lightning etc coming from the rooms. Windows can be boarded up (DIY foam boards or commercially bought ones from places like Spirit Halloween). Cobwebs and spiders placed on shutters, hung from eaves, gutters, etc. Sure you can get away with decorating your door. If you leave your vehicles outside, you can decorate them from the inside. Battery lighting inside can illuminate any skeletons or props you want to lock inside of them.

Sorry you have this problem. One shouldn't have to fence one's house in from neighborhood dogs, but in a lot of areas people have to contend with racoons, deer, etc so just other forms of wildlife with no bad irresponsible neighbors to fault. BTW crows at this time of year can pick at your stuff and be pretty damaging as well.

Before plunking down $50 or so on some ultrasound technology I would hope someone out there who has tried this can give you feedback. I also wonder if the wind would interfer with how the waves are dispersed. Sounds like you have a large piece of property to try to protect out in the open.

lol I have a shotgun I use bird shot, I have had to actually aim at one dog that was so aggressive he was stopping me from tending another dog that had been shot in the inner leg with a 22 as well as she had just come from the vet getting fixed . he would get low an start charging me ,she was in a pen so he couldn't get to her. Thankfully he ran when he saw that yep she would shoot me, other than him i have NEVER shot at a dog only the ground and those were the ones that refused to run off after getting in my trash can.
Ghost of Spookie yes i lived in country all my life an we have a 3 legged deer that bunks in the berries dogs don't seem to bother her mostly rabbits ,we also have 2 hawks nesting here to so wild life i would say is controlled to a certain extent. I do decorate inside i do it little by little so my dogs see me do it an don't freak out at the black lights and skulls.Last year we had gotten my biggest dog Lucy ,she had lived with an alcoholic and was very skittish, she still passes at rain and wants to see it for herself and must check everybody and every room out, She has turned into a great protective dog but listens to us about what person or thing is ok. So I will be doing the little at a time decorating again this year for her ,

There is an old saying with regards to this and a lot of other problems we haunters suffer from.

"Fences make good neighbors."

It will inhibit theft and vandalism, stop most animal issues (in my neighborhood, the worry isn't props torn up by dogs, but rather them getting pissed on by dogs), and keeps kids from entering the parts you don't want them in on Halloween night.

One of these days, I'll get around to taking my own advice. :D
It always makes me sad that there are dogs out that are so misbehaved, it means their owners don't care about them enough to train them or keep them safe or they are wild.

That said no one should have to deal with a misbehaved dog. Since you can't call animal control (did you try contacting the state police to see if they are aware of a statewide group that could help you?) I would go with the same suggestion above fencing.

I hope you get this under control so you can enjoy your yard, no one should have to deal with that. Good luck!
shoot dog, turn it into decoration, and message to other dogs.

The better option is to shoot the dogs' owners and turn them into props to send a message to others regarding getting their animals under control. If people cannot be bothered to take care of them properly, they should not own pets of any sort; it really frustrates me that animals suffer due to the ignorance of their supposedly-more-intelligent human owners.
Order a set of those electric firecrackers from FrightProps. Put them outside hooked to a wireless remote control.

Pop, pop,pop........yip, yip, yip............
So... three ideas:
1. The suggested fence around your haunt (but not around your many acres). You can find 4 foot high plastic fencing at Home Depot/Lowes/ etc. that is quite reasonable. Or maybe chicken wire at a local farm supply.

2. Motion controlled sprinklers: Not sure if they're available, but a motion sensor turning on a sprinkler valve (maybe two or three) might scare the dogs away.

3. Motion controlled skunk spray (my fav): when detected, a skunk spray coats the dog... who in turn goes home... who in turn.......

4 (I know, I said 3). An electric fence: they really do have electric fences to keep animals away from ponds (so they don't eat the Koi/Goldfish).

5. (sorry, too much fun). A servo controlled BB gun with vision sensor to detect dogs.

Rock salt a shotgun shell and let them have it. It's pretty easy and they'll remember you for sure, also non lethal. I'm a dog lover and against cruelty but sounds like they're a menace. Ask county animal control (wildlife officers would have them too) for humane traps and bait with hot dogs and turn them in?
If you don't have county animal control try the closest town with an AC officer maybe?

Some dog breeds just have personality traits you just can't train out of them. My boxers have always been very well trained, to the point that I tell them to take a leak and they do so on command, but when they see someone new they realize they can get to, it's all bets off. They go racing along with the thought of "hold on, hold on, let me go slobber this stranger hello and THEN I'll listen to what you have to say!" and bounce around the stranger doing their best Tigger impersonation.
