What about the end finials of fancy metal curtain poles - we have ball ones in the living room but you can get swirls. etc. Depends if you can scrounge 4 identical ones if you don't want to buy them.

I got these from Hobby Lobby. It got to be too much of a hassle to remove them each day so that the hearse would fit through the garage door. And I thought the hearse looked better without them.

I made these finials out of fence toppers that i got at Lowes then painted them gold. Lincoln's Hearse had finials with ostrich plums coming out of the top. If you haven't seen it, Google.

Having a flick on Ebay in the UK and found this for £4000, which is probably dearer than your was to build, but it is from the 1880's so may give you roof inspiration.

I was considering making one but what did you all do for wheels?

Why bring it in to the garage every night?
I made my own wheels by rolling 1/8 thick by 1 inch wide strapping into 24 and 30 inch diameter wheels and then welding 3/4 square thin wall tubing for spokes, Wood Tree Table Tree stump Vehicle

So nobody would steal or vandalize it. it's on wheels and rolls.
A modern, cheap "Brass" Bed gave me numerous shiney "Brass" things to play with ,it was in a local dumpster. A 1/4inch threaded rod ran through everything, easy to take apart.

I did the same thing using Lowes fence toppers
Sometimes less is more. How my hearse is lit I can't even really see the top of it very well so that detail would just go unnoticed. Just make sure any extra bells and whistles you add are actually visible is what I'm getting at.

I agree...that's why I don't have a ton of detail on mine. I am thinking about plastering the back of mine with all the stickers I have accumulated from running hall and full marathons. I think that would be appropriate for a funeral carriage
