Mowing the lawn today, and thinking about how to haunt my mailbox (no feedback yet to the ideas I posted in another thread):

http://www.halloweenforum.com/halloween-props/118236-haunted-mailbox.html

... I realized a great place for concealed audio. A water pipe / culvert that runs under the front of my driveway, close to the mailbox. Has anyone thought of putting wireless indoor/outdoor speakers in a culvert to haunt it? Possibly using a motion sensor to trigger audio? Might be very spooky for trick or treaters to hear strange, loud whispers coming out of both sides of the culvert behind them; hopefully not realizing the source. Although maybe it's too low to have a good impact? Better would be hearing sounds behind them at ear level?

What other audio would work well? I'm thinking:

* Heartbeats like you hear, or used to hear, in the attic area of the Haunted Mansion
* Isolated audio of the guy in the coffin in the Haunted Mansion saying "Hey, let me outta here!"
* Continuous isolated loop playing of the coyote (?) you hear outside the Haunted Mansion.

How would you do this effect? Or if you've already done something like it, how *did* you do it?

And where can I find a source for good, inexpensive, wireless indoor/outdoor speakers I could put in both ends of the culvert? Would these be on clearance anywhere in a local retail store like a Big Lots? Would prefer to order online if there are any good, inexpensive sources. Again, not looking for high quality. Just enough for a good scare.

I very much like the idea of different audio playing in different parts of a haunt. Could also see using hidden speakers in a culvert to play synchronized audio of projected ghostly footsteps crunching through the yard. All sorts of possibilities. Really got inspired by reading the Haunted Mailbox thread. Hope that picks up again. Because you'd get to set the mood right at street level. Looking for video and photos of haunted mailboxes people have already put together.

Walmart has recorders with loop playback. 1 for $30 and 2 for $40. Get a wireless speaker. Record what you want. Connect the transmitter and hide te speaker.
Thanks DMD. What would you, or others, recommend for an affordable (e.g. cheap but functional) wireless outdoor speaker system for this effect? What about motion sensor triggering of the audio? Or would a loop with semi-random intervals of silence work nicely? Or a continuous loop? Wondering what works best for those who've done this type of effect. I couldn't possibly be a pioneer on this one! :)

When you say wireless speaker; are you thinking fully wireless, battery powered or cord powered with wireless audio signal? IMO, if you have to run a cord to power the speakers, usually you might as well run a cord for the audio - unless there's some special consideration. If you are just running continuous ambient sounds with no triggers (e.g. burn a cd and have it repeat), I'd just find a cheap, used boombox - the kind with detachable speakers, and place the speakers at the culvert and run a length of cheap speaker wire back to the player. You'll be less worried about theft or damage that way.

/still thinking about the mailbox, but I need to finish a thing or two before I start something else :)

Thanks Terra and Dexter. Dexter I'm thinking fully wireless (batteries) with wireless transmission. Could be no such thing. Definitely don't want to run electrical cords all the way down the driveway and into the culvert. Maybe that will be some sort of D-cell battery powered boombox tuned to a blank radio station, using an FM transmitter. Or like you say, using a loop CD. Not really sure. Want to see what all my options are.

Hey let me suggest you take a listen to some tracks over at www.hauntaudio.com. Specificly the demonic whispers track. I have had some of their tracks downloaded for a while now, and like them quite a bit. They cost, but their worth checking out. They run or about an hour i think.

Thanks Rich. Sounds like that may be a great source for audio content. Right now, I'm mostly looking for advice on speakers / set-ups. Wondered who's "been there, done that" and/or wants to "do that"--and how they'd accomplish it technically.

Garden clearance?

Anyone seen anything at various big box stores being closed out that could be used for this effect? Maybe those wireless speakers that look like rocks? It would be fun to stock up on something like that and transmit different audio loops to various parts of the lawn. That would add interest and depth. Hearing things in different places.

I don't know if it would be feasible to use one of those small FM Transmitters (that you use to play your Ipod over the car radio) and transmit you sound to several FM radios hidden around the yard. Cheap shower radios are probably the best bet.

Thanks Dave. Cheap shower radios is a great idea! FM transmission may or may not be a problem. I've had one FM transmitter that I modified and it works decently range-wise. Unmodified ones used to play over a car radio have a pretty short reach. But I've been wanting to buy at least one new, higher-powered FM transmitter. Need to accelerate my research there, e.g. a not-very-expensive model that could be easily modified to give me the range I need in the yard. If I do my Haunted Car On the Lawn this year--quite likely--that would be a good place to stash battery operated FM transmitters (getting the audio source closer to the radios).

If you end up going wired, then you can just run speaker wires down your pipe. Not likely to short out, you can test a variety of different speakers to get the optimum effect you want. If the speaker is inside the pipe, it will have to be small which would probably eliminate the heartbeat sound, since it would need some good bass response to be completely effective. My two cents' worth. :)

Mike, I use one of those Ipod FM transmitters I bought off E-bay several years ago. Even though the package said it had a range of 15 yards, it will (no lie) transmit about 1/4 mile. I can try to find the same one if you are interested. I think it cost $3.00 plus a couple bucks shipping (from China).

Thanks CC and Dave. Dave if you can post the model that would be great!

OK-Here's the EXACT one that I've been using for years:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-200-Cha...er_MP3_Player_Accessories&hash=item3cc76c49fd

Like I said, I get a LOOOONG range from it with NO modifications.
I've ordered from China many times and I usually have the item within approximately two weeks.
Now, If you buy this and it doesn't give the range mine does, I'm going to be upset. But I think it's worth the gamble for $4 buck. Still better than paying $100 or more.

Thanks Dave! Like you say, very small wager to see if this will meet my needs. I like that it's both battery operated and can be powered from a car power outlet. My car has two outlets. Hope to place an order soon.

Great! Be sure to let me know what kind of range you get with it. Mine just lays on the ground and gives me the distance I get. Might get more if I raised it up!
Will do. Just ordered two of them. I increased the range of the output of an old Radio Shack one I purchased many years ago (SoundFeeder SF120) by:

1) Screwing in / replacing the small stock antenna with a much longer one taken from a boom box
2) Soldering / gluing on a battery pack and doubling the power. Originally took one AA battery. My mod gave it two AA batteries. Surprisingly didn't fry the electronics and I've been using it for probably 4 years that way.

Doesn't look like the model I'm buying has any way to add an additional antenna on it. But the fact that it uses two AAA batteries sounds promising as far as power output / strength goes. Maybe there is or isn't a correlation there with signal strength. But with my mod, I got both longer life before replacing batteries as well as farther reach. But nothing like what you got. Crossing my fingers. But at $8 for 2 of them, including shipping, I really have nothing to lose.

Thanks again for taking the time to post the exact model you have and a good purchase link. This could be the best purchase I make this season.
