Halloween trunk or treat mishap :(

Hey guys hopefully everyone had a very Happy Halloween!!

Ok let me start off by saying that I live in a condo on the 3rd floor we usually decorate the whole building, we only decorate on the back side where we live only and try to scale back from the front due to some of our neighbors being too scared, we never get trick or treaters been living here for over 10 years really miss handing out candy. We had a party last weekend on Saturday it was a hit a ton of people were terrified lol.

On Halloween I wanted to try out trunk or treating at a church/gospel. I called early in the morning to find out the hours and if we needed to pay to participated, I find out its 7 till 8:30 pm and that its free the lady on the phone was very nice!! I decide to bring my mom too to help decorate we head there at 5:45pm to start decorating. I decide to bring some props a dead Debbie zombie girl, 2 clowns that are animated but since there is no outlet around we decide to leave them static non-moving, and a skelly we dress up as a female, and a ring girl, along with other small props. We start setting up the clowns and put the zombie girl on the roof on the car, we immediately get cars stopping by taking pics. We are half done decorating when 1 of the pastors comes to our car and shakes our hands and we introduce ourselves he looks at our car and tells us we normally don't do gore or too scary we apologize and he says its ok and says do you mind putting the clowns away we ask about the rest which he says is fine I tell him im sorry this is out first trunk or treat he says its ok then leaves. I put one of our clowns in the back seat of my car so the small ones don't see and put a chair by the other one they are midget clowns so not too big. The folding chair covered the other clown so the little ones wouldn't see. I finish the car and then after I get it all done, another pastor comes along looking at the cars there was only like 2 including mines, it was 6:20 we figured more cars would show. The people in the other cars kept shaking their heads and got inside their car. The 2nd pastor comes up to us and shakes my hand and said did you call before coming??!!! I said yes I did and spoke with a woman over the phone. He said oh? Well we do "biblical" trunk or treats to show the small kids nothing scary or gorey I told him sorry we did not know and that the lady never told me that which she did not, she said no worries its not your fault, Ill ask if someway we can tie this in with the bible, I was thinking maybe he could say our car was the devils lol and evil is never good. He came back and said im sorry we don't think this will fit in with our mission. We have some decorations you could use though, I declined and said no thanks he said he was very sorry and he said I know all these props were costly and you finished setting up I told him again I was very sorry and he said no need to be no one told you. So we took everything down :(

I felt kinda bad and disappointed the car looked great!! I think the first pastor should of told us this when we were half done setting up instead of us finishing and having the other pastor come up and telling us that all our stuff wasn't allowed and that the trunk or treat was biblical?

Have any of you guys done trunk or treating? Are they all mostly biblical? I remember one year this church not too far from me did an actual haunted house inside the church in the basement and their props were extremely scary and gorey!!

Here is some pictures I took before I took it all down, it was a waste of time, although we had a tons of cars stop by and take pictures. I don't think id do another trunk or treat again.

btw we had another clown in the back seat I didn't get a picture of him!! Kinda sucks no trick or treaters came!
Sorry to hear that. It sounds like they had lots of time and chances to tell you it didnt work for them before you finished setting up. Your car looked great! At least people got to take some pictures so they must have enjoyed it. We did a trunk or treat on the 27th. We're in a rural area so even though we decorate the yard we never get any trick or treaters. Ours was at my daughter's elementary school though so definitely not biblical themed. If you dont have any kids maybe you have a niece or nephew whose school does trunk or treat and could go that route next year? I think a lot of schools do them now.

love that are you in Illinois as well? Yes I think there was a trunk or treat a school did near me I couldn't go it was on Friday the day before my party had lots of last minute things to get done I know next year Im not doing it at a church wish I would of been told before I finished setting up.
Thank you! Yes, we're in Algonquin. I think a school is definitely the way to go. There were adults dressed up as Michael Myers walking around the parking lot with big knives while the kids ran away screaming and laughing so your car would've been LOVED there.
oh awesome oak lawn here we do our entire building we get visitors but never trick or treaters. I buy my props and make some I know if I had a yard id get some for sure lol everyone that came to my party said damn you need a bigger place its amazing. Here are some pics of the props in my building some are pneumatic.

Those are fantastic! It's nice that people get to enjoy your props and all of the hard work you put into decorating at a party. We tried putting our house on Next door this year hoping for some trick or treaters but still not a one. Some people came and took pictures but that was it. Of course it probably didn't help that I waited until the night of the 29th to post it on there lol!
I'm amazed at how many talented people there are in our area. I never see anything when I drive around looking, must always be looking in the wrong spots.
You brought demon pig props, to a trunk or treat for little kids, at a church and you were surprised to be turned away?

Wow I have never heard of that. Yeah they should have specified what their rules were as in no gore only biblical themes.
I guess in the future check the so called fineprint. You didnt know, no one told you. The first pastor should have told you
when he saw what you had. Oh well. No worries.... the big day has passed so we can all look forward to the next one.

It is commonly known in our area that church held trunk or treats are non scary, non gore events for little kids. Parents can take them there knowing it is non threatening to them and won't induce nightmares!

Fine print? there was no ad in a paper or facebook or on their website they had it on their big lighted board/sign saying trunk or treat tonight at 7pm it was in big black letters.

Yeah but how are you going to make a trunk or treat biblical? Its Halloween nothing in Halloween is biblical, no wonder there was only 1 other car there lol.
i don't have much experience (any, really) with trunk or treats, but my assumption has always been that if it's at a church, they're probably going to want it played pretty little kid-friendly. sorry about the result here, but kudos to both you and the church for treating each other respectfully about it. it was a misunderstanding and now everybody knows for the future, and it sounds like you both handled it well.

Hate to be the contrarian, but I honestly can't believe you would ever think it would be a good idea to take horror props to a church trunk or treat. The folks who go there are the ones who don't want their kids to be subjected to the scary side of the holiday. School events are for people who worry about safety, but the church event goers are all about giving and not about horror.

I understand you were excited but I think the other repliers have a point. Was this your own personal church or just a local one? From my understanding trunk-or-treats are open to the public but they are moreso meant for the churchgoers and their children.

When I was growing up we didn't celebrate Halloween at church but we'd have an All Saints Day party where we'd dress as saints and angels and eat candy and fall themed treats.

I think if you can find a trunk-or-treat near you that's not sponsored by a religious group then that would be your best bet.

I have never been to a church trunk or treat, but I have always imagined that it is more of a wholesome family entertainment along the lines of a fall festival. Halloween means different things to different people. I think that I fall in the middle. I do not do inflatables or charlie brown type decorating. And, I do not do any gore, blood, mutilations or chainsaw stuff. I pretty much stick to skeletons, clowns, spiders and snakes.

It sounds like to me that you have more of a teenager/adult mature type decorating style and need to find the fit that is right for that category.

Did you read my post? There was a church not too far from this one that had an actual haunted house inside in the basement with blood and gore. They had props outside as well and people in costumes dressed as zombies and clowns, so its been done before at the churches around me. I saw kids there as young as 5 go inside so its been done all churches are different.

the one church that did the haunted house had the same decorating style as I did and kids of all ages attended my car wasn't too bad at all.
