Well you can't play a DVD on a vcr. Haha. All kidding aside, it all depends what output you have on your DVD player and what inputs you have on your projector. Make and model of each (player and projector) and/or a photo of the input/output area will take away any guess work.
The most common outputs would be composite. this would be a yellow video out, with a white and red for audio out. Standard rca cables work here. You would hook them up to the inputs of matching colors on the projector.
Next would be component. Colors consist of green/blue/red for video with white and red additional audio.
Then there is hdmi. One cable outputs audio and video.
