It was a great build til a power surge fried the whole thing

I even had a surge protector and it did nothing. My powersupply and motherboard was melted literally.
I have a new rig now I just need to mod it. This time I bought a UPS system to regulate the voltages coming from the wall.
We had a lightning strike that wasn't even direct
(went through the phone lines nearly a block away) but did some good damage. I mean it actually was powerful enough to turn on a switched off light

Learned the hard way that the only way to fully protect yourself is to
unplug from the wall. Surge protectors and such are good for glancing blows but
nothing will stop a direct hit.
Here's what we learned and now do. Contacted the electric company and had them put on a whole house surge protector, surge protector for the phone and cable lines, got high-quality surge protectors for the good stuff and when it's a really bad storm: power down and unplug. It's the only way to be sure

I have kept all the paperwork for the surge protectors we bought because they insure for damages for equipment plugged into them.
Here was the damage list: alarm system
(which was nice because it wailed and wailed until we ripped the wiring from the wall), TV, main controller for whole house sound and two subwoofers. A monster box sacrificed itself and saved the projector and receiver in the theater room. Good boy! Monster was great and promptly sent out a new one. Oh, all this happened at 3 am. Sounded like a bomb went off above the bed.
