I remember when Halloween was all about spooky and scary things. Now we have cute Halloween and pastel Halloween. I don't want to see pink pumpkins and light blue ghosts. There's nothing cute about Halloween lol it's supposed to be spooky. Am I overreacting? Should I just accept this new crap? Lol

How do you feel about this new Halloween?

There's always been cute Halloween. The retro and vintage stuff is a pretty even mix of spooky and cutesy.

Retailers are always chasing the styles and trends in decor to sell more stuff, so it makes sense that they'd glam/sparkle/pastel/cute up Halloween too to get a piece of that market. I just end up being choosy during those years and remember I don't have to buy/use anything I don't like. And spooky/scary is still always there. Sometimes they come up with some nice new takes on spooky and cute that are quite nice. And some of the cute stuff is, well, pretty cute. As long as folks decorate/celebrate, I'm happy.

I was looking up some Halloween costumes from waaaaaay back and it was spooky as heck, I kinda want to see more of that vintage spookiness, but I know times are different and of course, retailers are gonna make their money and follow the trend. I like real creepy, spooky stuff. Lol

Everyone is terrified to offend anyone these days. Most of the popular costumes from when I was a kid, they would never fly these days. You can't be a hobo, that's "offensive" to the homeless and if you do anything that could be interpreted as blackface, you're going to get attacked. Dress up like a witch? That's offensive to Wiccans! It's really stupid. Plus, the fact that if you wanted to wear anything but a cheap plastic mask with an elastic cord, you had to be creative and creativity these days seems a thing of the past. That's especially the case if you're decorating. Most people just buy overpriced crap from Home Depot or Spirit. Back in the day, you had to make it yourself. Plus, if you wanted to make a haunted house back in the day, you just did it. No insurance requirements. No government walkthroughs. Nobody got hurt. People had fun. Today, it's all absurdly expensive and covered in government oversight.

Screw that.

I recall a couple of years ago there were pastel Day of the Dead decorations. I don't celebrate DotD, but even I know the bright colors on any DotD decor represent various aspects of the holiday so if you trade the bright colors for pastels you're not truly representing the holiday properly.

Yeah, someone probably bought it because pink & light blue are their favourite colors, but I haven't seen any pastel DotD stuff since then so someone probably set those companies straight.

I am a traditionalist, orange, black, yellow, some purple & of course red for Halloween but I know that every year there's some new trend that's everywhere, like sequined pumpkins, pink & blue velvet pumpkins, lately gnomes for every holiday & then some, & I just don't put them in my cart but I know someone keeps buying them even though it's not me.

I don't mind cute stuff, you gotta have something for kids plus some vintage/vintage repro stuff is supposed to be cute, & I have some cute stuff, but I look at a lot of it this way, at least that Halloween stuff exists at all since that means someone is decorating & celebrating "our" holiday.

But seriously kids, I wanna know which one of you keeps buying these gnomes. You will put on a list & be punished accordingly!!!;)

I have my preferences, and it is very different than what's popular these days. However, I am grateful to see anyone participate in my favorite holiday, even if I don't like their version. If we want the holiday to survive, we have to accept it changing with the times. Do you think people from 100 years ago would approve of what you've done to THEIR holiday?

I agree, if you want to fill your yard with bloody & gory stuff, have at it. If you wanna fill your yard with inflatables, do it. If you want to have everything from Spirit then that's fine. If you want everything you put out to be something you made with your own hands, then that's fine too.

As long as people are celebrating the holiday the way they want celebrate it I'm fine with it.

Halloween is what each of us choose to make it. We are in charge of one person in our life, ourself. I try to make it spooky, scary etc… because that is what I like. I have a lot of fun with it and enjoy what I do. My neighborhood does seem to like it.

If someone else has fun doing Halloween differently, more power to them and I hope they get the same enjoyment I do.

And that is one thing that Halloween from the past and present share. Fun and enjoyable.

I agree that there is Sooo much room these days for someone to be too easily offended by the pettiest of costumes. That being said, in my neck of the woods, Iowa, we are a pretty laid back people who are mostly about live and let live. Has Halloween changed? From where I am looking, I would say no. Honestly, the only changes I've noticed have already been around since I turned 21 like 16 years ago and thats the skimpy, sexy costumes the ladies wear to the bars or college parties. Me personally, I like to keep my Halloween spirit and decor as close to old school as I can. Im a bit of an 18th century goth style dude. Id rather have 3 porcelain dolls staring at you than a severed head in a stake, does that make sense?

Pile it on, I'm the same way, inflatables and pastels vs an empty or undecorated house, I'll take the former any day.

Don't be all gate keeping with the holiday, do your thing and enjoy doing your thing. Stop worrying about what the person down the street is doing. That's why we are as we are as a society today- too many people worried about what others are doing and if we approve.

As a kid who trick or treated in the 70's, here's what we dressed as..

(I was Oscar the Grouch) so it's always straddled the cute and scary.

I don’t care what retailers put out that’s not my style I just don’t buy the items. I’m with the others decorate to suit your style. I hate all the clown props that dominate the retailers each year but people buy them or they wouldn’t be so many of them. Clowns just aren’t scary to me but to some people they are terrifying.I’m not a gore decorator either. With that being said tho I still love to see all those clowns and the gore on display and look thru the pictures and videos of every haunt I can that makes me happy to see people decorate 🎃

I haven't had any Wiccans attack me or try to shut me down when I have dressed as a witch. I have a number of witch masks from different vendors, Death studios, Be Something studios, Zagone and Topstone. The only thing that I have noticed is that trick-or-treating is in a decline in my area. I feel this is due to so many of those trunk or treats. Hard to compete with an event that has candy, face painting, food, and other prizes. We have a handful of people who decorate their yards and it's typically store-bought stuff from Walmart to Home Depot. I am fine with whatever folks do.

Amont many. many. many. many more. It should be about having fun. Instead, it's all about "the message".

Not saying you should stop. No one should. Just pointing out that this is the kind of world we live in now and it's not changing for the better.
If they got the memo ~ I don't think they cared. Btw this is a blast
