This was an idea I had a few hours ago....

"Halloween Forum, a large community of members and so many that have helped others and just had a good affect on others. But how should we thank them, messages? Not really....
How about awards!
Why not thank those on the forum properly and vote for them for being a great help to others...."

This could be a yearly thing where myself and some others will have the chance to organise a vote and give out several prizes to a few members....

Prizes could be vouchers from companies, and could be accompanied by a lovely certificate....

Please give feedback on this topic and let me know whether this will be a good idea...

That's an awesome idea!

We could start by PM-ing nominations (including a brief blurb about why that person is being nominated) to the organizer, who then makes a poll out of the nominated names, and the top however many vote getters get the awards.
Ooo! is it possible to make a poll such that voters can't see the results? Because then we could do an awards ceremony (like the Oscars with spiderwebs and pumpkins) on youtube...OR live on ustream.tv...hmmm....

There are other ways that we can do this. It is not something that can happen overnight as it would take a little time, but there are additional things that I can implement that may be able to help.
Need to give some additional thought though.

There could be a few categories, maybe ones that match the forum categories. There are some that specialize in some but not all.

Agree with vouchers and certificate. Maybe a highly prized HF t-shirt, sound fx CD, etc. Or provide a list of things that they can pick from. The craft guy may want a new glue gun. The animatronic guy may like a wiper motor. You could also the guys at Hauntcast so they can add it to their show.

Because then we could do an awards ceremony (like the Oscars with spiderwebs and pumpkins) on youtube...OR live on ustream.tv...hmmm....

I think it is a brilliant idea. When someone helps me with a problem or even just takes the time to respond to a thread, I am always so thankful and like to pay it forward. By awarding certain people in various catagories I think will only enhance an already great forum. I think it would be wise to allocate a predetermined amount of time for all members to discuss ideas pertaining to this subject.

I think something like a quarterly awards might keep things fresh, keep people inspired and interested.

I don't know how others would feel about it but maybe a monthly dues of an insignificant amount can be deposited into a paypal account for awards.

Oh, yeah, I'm down with that idea, I think it would stimulate input. We had something like 2,000 people on-line at the same time last Halloween; let's double that.

There's a technical forum I sometimes use for work called Tek-Tips Forums they have a system where you can thank a person for a post, thereby giving them a star. It then accumulates the stars and weekly they name "Tipmaster of the Week". A similar system of thanking individuals for helpful posts may be useful in setting this up. That way, you don't just nominate who is fresh in your mind, but as the year goes by, people can be rewarded for valuable posts and those points could accumulate.

What a great Idea !!!

So, how about the winners also being presented with an award image that they can post either in their albums on the forum or on their website, if they have one.

I know that HomeHauntNews has an image that one can post on their site, so something along the lines of this. Just a thought ...

I think this is actually the fairest and best idea. Using prizes or awards would eliminate members located outside of the USA and materialize/commercialize the contributions that members make. Contributions they make out of their love for halloween and prop making never needing or expecting a prize for it. Recognizing someone for their contributions is never out of place.

I think it's a great idea.
However, I'm with meeps in that I don't think prizes are appropriate for this kind of thing.
All of us, I'm sure, freely offer help and advice out of a desire to help our fellow artists and haunters and not for any material gain.
I think a simple "Member of the Month" certificate that could be emailed to the winning member by larry would be more than reward enough for most of us..And less of a logistical nightmare for larry too..
