Fog Ring Cannon - a new trick to consider

And an easy one to make too!

I was at a concert recently* and saw something new to me, and instantly started considering the possibilities. Cued by the drummer, big rings of fog that shot out over our heads quite far into the audience. Everyone around was pretty impressed. I was thinking, "wouldn't this scare the crap out of somebody, shooting fog at them..."

So, I come home and put the google-fu to work and it turns out this is a relatively easy prop. Trash can with a hole, vinyl, bungee, fog machine...

I'm considering some ways to get this automated, where somebody doesn't have to stand around and tap it.

*Kongos, for the curious. It was great.

These are awesome!
My friend Leslie, uses these in her haunt.
Part of her haunt is pirate themed, and they make great cannons.
It's a great effect. You can actually blow someones hat off with the smoke ring burst of air.
That's fantastic - simple and cheap!

I have an "Airzooka" - a kids' toy, basically the same thing, but smaller - and used it last year as a scare. The air comes out remarkably fast and will make most people flinch even if they know it's coming!

The only thing I don't like about the airzooka is that it's loud. How loud is the trash can version?

Would love to see more on that!
The one's I've used are not very loud at all. Just a little thud from the membrane being pulled back and released.

Here's a short video of one in action.

At about 1:25 the video shows it in action, with just enough of a drop in noise so that you can hear the slight "pop" when he hits it.

I'm going to have to put some time into how to mount and set it off if I do make one. Currently pondering some variation on a drum pedal and infrared sensor. This will take more thought, but if I can pipe fog into the thing it'd be a shame to have to man the cannon all night.
