Funny, I actually made a new FCG this year using one of those $3 motors AND a counterweight!

The FCG is made from a Blucky torso with some toilet paper mache covering it, Bucky hands and a carved wighead as the skull:

It runs nice and smooth! the counterweight had to be added because the movement was a little slow when the crank arm was pulling and lifting the body of the ghost.

I'll try and get a video tonight if it doesn't rain...or I'll just get one inside.

Also, I may try anchoring his "tailbone" and seeing what kind of movement I can create that way...

Here is a rather dark video of the movement of my new FCG using the $3 motor. My camera wouldn't take the vid from outside (this FCG is in my upstairs window) so I had to take it in the room right next to the rig.

Man, I gotta get a better way to do video!

I love the speed of your motor! I think the slower motor, the better and yours has the spookiest speed I've seen. Mine (Dayton motor) moves too fast for my liking.

Thanks, Terra! I actually do have another, more "traditional" FCG I built about 5 years ago using the good ol' Dayton gearmotor and it looks more like yours. She goes in one of the downstairs window and this new guy goes upstairs. Maybe I'll work on lowering the speed of my original FCG to be a little more *creepy*

We think alike! I'm working on the same thing. Gonna try to see if a dimmer switch slows it down. I'll keep you posted.

I think it should...I used a dimmer to adjust the speed of my Axworthy Ghost a few years ago and that was powered with the motor from an old ceiling fan, which is plain-ol' 120V just like the Dayton motors.

I thought about trying to put up the Axworthy this year, but I may just cannibalize it because I see no way in hell that it'll stand up to the ridiculous Kansas winds we get!!
