Hi Everyone,
I hope this is posted in the correct section! I searched through the Dot Room threads, and the last one was from 2014. Does anyone know if luminescent spray paint works just as well as regular neon paint? Wormyt has an amazing tutorial on dot rooms using neon paint, I’m just trying to see if I can save time with spray paint and have the same awesome effect.

I believe they make a luminescent spray paint or some sort of clear coat that will make things fluoresce. So if the neon spray paint doesn't glow like you want you could spray over the dots with the clear coat to make them glow.

Thank you for your helpful suggestions! I forgot to ask in the original post..what 3D glasses work best in a dot room? Wormyt posted pictures of the glasses she used, but it’s hard to read the print on the glasses. It looks like they say Chromadepth. I want to make sure I get the proper 3D glasses since there are a few variations of glasses to choose from.

You are welcome. Unfortunately I can't help you with what glasses to wear. I've never done a 3D Dot room before. I did do a black light room, where I had the room completely blacked out and only lit with black lights. I hung masks that glowed under black light at various heights and then had someone dressed all in black and wearing a mask that would well boo as they jumped towards the folks walking through.
Sounds like you are wanting to do some sort of 3D effect. There is a brand of 3D glasses called ChromDepth but as to whether those are what you are wanting I couldn't say.

It’s funny you mention the mask version instead of dots, I was just discussing that idea! I’ve seen pictures of the masks too, and the effect is pretty awesome. I am debating whether or not to do dots or masks, possibly both. This is for a school haunt, and we basically don’t have many volunteers. So, I want to go with whatever gives a great effect but also saves time. Obviously, I think the masks would be much quicker than painting dots all over, but I do love the dots too! I think the dots with the 3D glasses would pop more, although I’ve seen 3D with masks too. Did you find that the person hiding in the mask room was as easily camouflaged as someone in a dot room?

Yeah the person who was wearing all black blended in quite nicely. Key is to make the room as dark as humanly possible. Sweat pants and a turtleneck and black cotton gloves were the best at disguising the person as there was no stitching or buttons or zippers, or anything else on the outfit that could possible glow under the black light. We used black fishing line to hang the masks with. I hung black plastic on the walls and put it on the floors and ceiling. I had my haunt in an old cattle sales pavilion. The haunt scenes were set up in the stalls they would hold the animals in that were waiting to be sold. So the ceilings were low enough for me to cover with the plastic otherwise I would have just left them the way they were.
The folks who went through loved it. The actor was told to be careful with the young ones and not to jump or yell boo too loudly. They mostly just crept closer to the young ones and lightly moan and groan. For the older folks they could go as wild as they wanted so long as they didn't touch anyone. I was the actor for a short time one night and I had a guy built like a linebacker literally shove his young daughter towards me as he jumped about 6 feet into the air and started to take off running. I blew my cover when I started to laugh so hard I about peed my pants. That poor little girl. I swear I wanted to hand that guy a "Father Of The Year" trophy out of pure sarcasm of course. I still laugh about that to this day. Sad thing was, all I did was crept close and in a normal voice said boo.

Neon paint isn't necessarily fluorescent. It might glow under black light but don't count on it. Test a small amount first.

The first year we did a dot room, our volunteers got tired of painting dots and mixed in hand prints. We used cheap tempera paint so it was easy to wash off their hands. One things to keep in mind: fluorescent paint is semi-translucent and works better with white underneath instead of black.

It is the Chromadepth glasses you need. 3D movie glasses won't work.

I’ve decided to go with the masks, it will just make my life easier, and I think it looks creepier! That story about the dad is hilarious. It’s amazing how fear really makes people act so crazily. You know what they say “the bigger they are the harder they fall” lol! That poor kid! Stories like that make us nutty haunters do what we do. I think we may use a morph suit or just plain black clothing like you suggested to save $. Thank you SO much again for your help. I will post pictures in late October of the room.

Thank you for the suggestions and info on the Chromadepth glasses! I know fluorescent paint is the way to go, but oddly enough the tutorial on here was used with Apple Barrel Colors neon craft paint. So, I’m assuming it will work and hope that it does. I will do a test patch just to double check before I proceed. Do you have any paint suggestions?

That looks like it would be fun. Maybe it is something you can do for next year. That will give you time to find supplies cheap or on sale and maybe round up a few volunteers. I know the pains of trying to find enough volunteers.

I think the mask room is great for this year, this way I can get a feel for what to do and see which supplies work best. The dot room will be a fun change for next year, I try to add a little something different every year. The goal is just to basically scare the kids and adults, and I think the mask room will do just that.

Oh I forgot, don't forget to wear black shoes and socks as well. The actor will want to be as invisible as possible.

Thank you, you’re the best! I actually read somewhere to slip black socks over shoes to really blend in, but I feel like that may be a slipping hazard. Although, socks with the non slip stuff on the bottom could work. Also, black gloves like you mentioned.
