I may have missed one in there, so here's a link to the FDA recall site:
FDA Recalls, Market Withdrawals and Safety Alerts

Honestly folks, there's many, many more recalls and alerts regarding undisclosed allergens than there are about any chemical contamination.

Chances are very high that the candy our children (and ourselves) will be enjoying Halloween and the days following will be quite safe for consumption.

Additionally, the infants that have become ill (some of which have indeed died) in China have been sickened due to prolonged exposure to melamine, in large quantities (anyone who's had an infant on formula knows just how much they consume).
Chances of consuming that level of melamine for an adult, or even a child, through candy is pretty low...I'd worry about diabetes first, if you're eating that much candy!!!

Joe, thanks for the list.
But it's better to be safe than sick.
Or worse.
I absolutely agree RJ - and I want to thank you for bringing this to light, as most people probably never knew about it!

Flip side of the coin: things like this can too easily start a panic...I'm just trying to let folks know not to toss out all their kids candy over this, until they check first.

...and Cadaverino, yes, I might trust the FDA a touch more than that video, but only a little.
After all, it is still a government agency **shudder**

Thanks very much Joe. I had no idea! Since I control the email list for the entire neighborhood, I'm sending this out through a group email alert and putting it on our neighborhood website!

Well at least the government could punish such companies that make these products and ban them forever. No buying means their closure
They won't. The gov is too scared to piss off another large gov. Especially right now. China's getting alot of money off of us. Mostly from greedy companies such as these.

you won't find it if you're not looking. That's what the gov't is trying to do now w/ mad cow, stop testing the cows all together (right now they test less than 1%). i'm sure that if ALL the candy manufacturers traced their ingredients at least one or two more would find their source at least partly coming from this place. But does Mars, Hershey, or Nestle want that to go public at halloween? HELL NO! Especially at this time of year, they'd take a huge hit.

There's no way to be sure, so be safe- try to see if there's a country of origin on the package. Even if it's USA they still might use imported ingredients, as most companies do. Until that labelling is mandatory, we take a gamble every time we eat.
