I got my 1g and 1/2gig MP3's for $5 each.
Sansa... they usually have them cheap... I got a deal through Google (Google Buy or something)... signed up and got $10 off... the actual MP3's were purchased through Buy.com (working with Google)..
So... might try starting at Buy.com. The ones I got take 1 AAA battery - last a long time, easy to use, and, like you said, were CHEAP. Good stuff.
EDIT: This was over a year and a half ago, so no idea what's out there now.
