I'm trying to get a couple of these gate columns done by halloween - here is where I'm at on the first one. I've put foam in areas where I'm shooting for a masonry/cement look and want those parts to look old, cracked, etc.

Any ideas on a good methodology for this effect? I have some monster mud I thought I could use to give it a stony look and hide the seams of the foam pieces. Thanks for any creative suggestions for aging those areas (as well as the 'brick').

I used 80 grit paper (a course gritted sand/glass paper) folded in half, I gave mine a rough rub over and used the edge of the paper to carve/cut cracks in. Then I painted with a homemade monster mud. If i can figure out how to add photos i'll upload some for you..

Monster mud will crack at the seams especially when you move it around every season. Just go thick on the paint in those areas. For weathering try cutting cracks with a saw, chip edges off, sand or use a rasping tool or coarse file. You cant mess it up. if the seams show still add some moss in those areas. Good luck

Fling a little acetone on the styrofoam for a nice weathered look.

Use Restore 10X in a Grey. After the first coat dries, apply a second coat perpendicular to the first, then lightly drag a very wide brush across it. When it dries it will look like a rough concrete.

I was going to say a few droplets of flug acetone or even VERY light regular spry paint before you seal it might do it.

For the stone texture I always add sand on top of the wet paint and then rub it around. After that is dry I give it a second coat of paint. As for filling in the seems
I sand the seem down then fill it in with outdoor window caulk. (Paintable)

I always use gray Drylock to paint my tombstones/pillars. It already has a grainy kind of concrete texture to it. Drylock is actually used to paint basement walls to seal up cracks so it also waterproofs everything.
