So many choices for murder mystery party kits, downloadable PDF files etc. Which one have you bought from and why did you like it?

Two years ago I did my first Murder Mystery Party. I got the Homicide on Halloween at the Chamber of Screams Haunted House from My Mystery Party. It was much cheaper than some of the others listed. I believe it was around $40. I liked it because it was Halloween themed and was very easy to follow. I actually didn't participate because I thought I shouldn't so I could make sure everything went according to plan. However, I could have very easily participated and it still would have went smoothly.

A few years ago I ran the Haunted Hotel Homicide (lol) from www.mymysteryparty.com. Another in our party chose that one, but I ran it. I did not care for this particular mystery pack for our group because it relied on a very close attention to detail to note tiny discrepancies to determine the killer. If it's a serious, sober group it might work for you. But, well, we were a group in our 20s to early 40s, with a signature cocktail for the night. Absolutely no one got even close to figuring it out. I might try one of their other games in the future.

This year we're going to try the Masquerade Ball from www.mastersofmystery.com. It's a little different format from MMP, and I can tell already I'm going to adjust the format a little bit. But the characters are good, and allegedly you can play it to be replayable by selecting a random killer. I'm not 100% convinced about that, but I also liked that it doesn't have stupid "trying to be clever" names in it.

I have hosted a lot of murder mysteries. You'll want to think about how involved you as the host want to be, the personalities of your guests, and how you envision the evening to go. That will all influence which one you get.

I find the PDF versions best. You can send the character books to your guests ahead of time so that they can dress appropriately and learn their character. Then print off everthing for guests who forget their copies and create gift bags with all of the 'supplies' they may need (depending on the theme, I've even replaced some paper items with real $1 store items. Squirt guns are a lot more fun in a wild west game than a picture of a gun, haha).

My personal favorite is: Murder at the Four Deuces Mature Download Murder Mystery Party Game There is a mature and a tame version. But I like the mature version. They are unscripted, and include room for creative expression. "Every mystery is filled with plenty of opportunities for blackmail, bribery and other nefarious schemes for all your guests."

One of our guests' favorites was: Way out West – a murder mystery party game with a Western setting for 10 to 24 guests
Again, there is a tame and an adult version as well as room for creative expression (fitting for the wild west).

I printed the way out west free pdf version just to read over it and see what unscripted is all about. Its a little hard to follow in that not only are we trying to figure out the murderer, but there are side games happening as well? Money stealing, dueling etc. Not sure why.

I have also used mymurdermyster.com. I used the Noxhelm murders one. It went impeccably! I will be getting the gatsby one this year.
