I always tend to do this, party is on Friday and I get last minute idea so out comes the craft box again! I had seen a Zombie heart costume prop whilst shopping (for £20) and thought I could do this for my Pirates party and make it a Davy Jones heart. I have to admit, I should of took photos of it 'in the making' but I wasn't too sure it would work, and after several attempts with balloons and different materials all epic fails, I finally had the idea that I used. I will try to explain how I did it as best I can, the chest it is in is just made from a cereal box, it still needs some more paintwork, but gives you the idea here's the video of it working:

I started this by destroying my Daughters teddy bear (with her permission) which when you squeeze it, it lights up and has a heartbeat motion.

My Daughter is a teenager now and didn't want it, she has never actually used it anyway and it still had the 'try me' cord on. I took off all the fabric so I was left with the light up moving box, I also realized that it would only work when you cuddled the bear so I left the 'try me' cord on as you just press a small button for it to work for so many seconds.

I had an old red thin latex glove that was from a devil costume, this was ideal as it already had wrinkles etc on and was light enough to see the light through, so I cut the ends with the fingernails on off to just leave what look like the tubes that connect the heart to the body, I put the box from the bear inside the glove and secured the wrist end together with an elastic band. I then cut an empty PVA glue container up to just below halfway and stuck the glove (wrist part down) inside the container with the hand part facing up just to give it something to stand in. I then gave it a coat of red acrylic paint to make it a bit shiny, and added some dark lines and effects. I then stuffed the finger parts with tissue paper to make them stick out, and bent some of them and made some smaller than others, I then glued on a piece of 'Cheerio' cereal, painted it red and black to make it look like the end of the tube where they had been cut off from the body. I also used some of the fingers from the other glove to add more tubes. (The glove I have shown is grey but same sort of thing as used)

I made the chest from a cereal box, put the heart in and just surrounded it with dark green bags to hide the stand. I put a small hole in the back of the chest and threaded the 'Try Me' wire through it. The idea been that when I show this to people they will lift the lid and I will press the button, which they won't see, and the heart will start.

I think it's pretty good for no cost, as always I welcome any comments or ideas for improvement :)

You my friend are very creative. I wanted a beating heart for my pirates collection but just couldn't locate anything. I settled for the color changing one at spirit. There was an old beating heart toy I found a video of but that toy I could not locate. Wish I had one. This is very cool.

Thanks for the positive comments. I am pleased how it has turned out. As I said the actual box came from a light up bedtime teddy bear, there are similar ones available on Ebay and in the stores, and I have seen a similar thing in a bedtime pillow also. If you check out Ebay you may be able to get a second hand bear relatively cheaply, and then all you need is the red glove (originally got mine in Pound Shop) then you can have a go at making one yourself to add to your pirate collection, it was a bit fiddly but very easy:)

Love the ingenuity of using a glove. If I wasn't told what it was before hand (no pun), I would have thought it was a bought heart.

I have a Davey Jones heart setup as well, but I couldn't do the beating heart trick with my heart. Had to settle for led light outside under the lid.

Would love to see yours in action.

Yes, Danski the box I took out of the bear, was basically a little black box with an on/off button on the bottom (takes AA batteries), but I left the 'try me button' wire on, it had like a plastic pad thing on the top of the box that lit up and moved up and down, when it was in the bear it made his heart glow and move up and down but you had to cuddle him to make it work. If I hadn't have left the 'try me' wire in you would have had to press the heart to make it work.:)

Thanks for the positive comments Icepick. There is a video link on the thread showing it working. Your heart looks great! As I said to Danski, if you could get hold of one of the bedtime bears, you could easily modify your heart to make it beat and light up I'm sure, have a look on Ebay as they are available you may be able to get hold of a second hand cheap one:) the glove worked ideal as the latex was strong but light enough that the movement and light could still be seen, have to say I tried all sorts first, balloons, bags, material all were an epic fail.

As I said it was an old bear my Daughter had since she was small. The closest thing I can find is this bear on Ebay that has the beating heart effect http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BABW-BUIL...115?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item35de494b93 , it has the beating effect and there are a few available all in US with different prices. I also came across this Zombie prop with a light up beating heart, thought you may be able to use the heart part of this also with a bit of work on it http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MANNY-THE...135?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item19f533fbdf

You will have to let me know if you get one of them and create your Davy Jones Heart, I'd love to see it! Just try and put the guilt out of your mind for destroying a poor little teddy bear ! LOL :D

No problem ooojen! You will have to post a pic if you make one for your lab, I would love to see it! As I said previously, I had a few attempts using different things and was just about ready to bin it when I thought of the glove, so it's always worth sticking with it if it doesn't go right first time:D

Certainly would Danski! It would be ideal for it. But then you wouldn't have the utter joy that we all have at our sheer frustration when we have to make several attempts at a prop that fail every time:mad:, but then eventually we get it right and it works :D It would be too easy to just go and buy them........LOL:D
