AAAARRGGHHH! They carved up "...The Great Pumpkin!!!"

Outrage! We were sitting watching It's The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown, an annual tradition. but ABC edited out a classic scene, the one where Snoopy dances, and is ultimately overcome emotionally by Schroeder's WWI music.
Who cares if you dismember a classic, as long as you can cram in another minute of commercials.

They may show it again like they do with the Christmas special. They'll show the edited version of the Christmas special early, then later in the month they rerun the full version.

That's our family's favorite scene! We all howl along with Snoopy. Glad I didn't watch it. I'll stick to the full length DVD. Though I must admit, I kind of miss the Dolly Madison commercials from my childhood, and my kids always comment about the McDonalds commercials from when they were little. Somehow they still managed to show the whole thing back then.

Those Dolly Madison commercials used to scare the bejeebus out of me. Not sure why- but they did!
I know! I love that scene..and I was like WTH??
Wait a minute... they also removed the scene where Lucy pulls the football on Charlie Brown!
They keep on cutting shows and movies to fit them into TV for either length constraints or b/c they don't want a certain scene showed. F-em!
More room for commercials = more money for the networks

That scene is in "A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving"

I think they cut a few of Snoopy's 'adventure' scenes as well last night.

I looked up the football gag on the Peanuts Wiki. Apparently it was in a number of TV shows, including both Great Pumpkin and Thanksgiving.

List of TV specials where the football gag is pulled
It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown
A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving
You're a Good Sport, Charlie Brown
It's Your First Kiss, Charlie Brown
It's Magic, Charlie Brown (At one point, Charlie Brown does manage to kick the football, when he is invisible)
A Charlie Brown Celebration (The storyline where Lucy vows not to pull the football away if Charlie Brown gets better, and he kicks her finger)
You're in the Super Bowl, Charlie Brown

That's outrageous for them to cut a classic scene for any reason. Be it for commercial time or some P.C. BS.

I'm sure it's to make more commercial time. If you watch any old DVDs of half-hour shows from the 60's, they run pretty much 24 to 25 minutes long. A half-hour show now runs 20 to 21 minutes tops.

Networks gotta get that almighty advertising dollar. :(
It's on again this Thursday the 30th & it will run for a full hour so you'll get to see everything. That's exactly what I thought they'd do because that's exactly what they do with the Christmas special.
In 1964, an hour long TV show was 50 to 52 minutes long with the lost time going to commercials.

In 2014, an hour long TV show is 38 to 42 minutes long, the remainder lost to commercials.

That's the real explanation for the editing. They had to carve out 4 to 6 extra minutes to fit broadcast standards 48 years after the show first aired.

However, I prefer to think of it as ABC screwing things up trying to prove they can do better edits than CBS ever did. :D
As Charlie Brown would say, "Aughhhhh!" :D

We're good over here, we have it on DVD. We watch it like 100 times a year, LOL.

Thanks for the heads up.

The first half hour is the Great Pumpkin, the second is "You're not elected, Charlie Brown"
That is criminal! I love watching Snoopy dance. Why should they need another commercial? The show is about 40 years old so has paid for itself fifty times over. I guess they know the high viewership and want to try and reach customers. NOT the way to endear yourself to viewers on that classic.

I predict that one day that we'll be watching commercials with 1-2 minute segments of programming in between.
Well this way it gets aired twice so twice the commercials for them. It's actually a win-win situation for everyone. You can watch live the edited version (which is usually earlier in the month) to get you in the mood while you're decorating or building & then later when you're really ready for it you can watch the full version.
