If you look on page E-41 there is a feature that allows you to correct for the color of the wall you are projecting on. It also appears that this feature can be set to automatic so it determines what the correction is by itself. I don't know for sure this is your issue but it sounds like it. I can assure you that the Atmos videos are made so the black background portions are blank.
I like JCO's idea of using 3 single candles in a FCG configuration rather than a single candelabra. However, an issue in either case is "how do you hide the string?" Even if you use a flat black paint on the string, if it is close to the light source you are going to see it. That is why the solution that Paul Kreutz used is so interesting as you could implement his method of a weighted counter-balance AND something like a FCG mechanism like this.

The resistance to air flow in the 1" or smaller pipe will be much greater than that of a 4" pipe. Just try breathing through a 1" pipe vs breathing through a drinking straw and you will see what I am talking about. The longer the pipe the more resistance and any bends in the pipe will also make it worse. A possible solution would be to run a large pipe down the middle of the area with smaller pipes branching off. This is essentially how ventilation systems in buildings are designed. ...
From what I see on the web they create “glassless” mirrors for places like gyms using Mylar so I expect if you do it right you can get pretty good results. Looks like you can get a roll of Mylar film from amazon for less than $10 so it is worth experimenting with. If you just google “Mylar mirror” you can find lots of info.
@Spookie Thanks for the clips - now I understand what you are trying to do. I think I would go with the taller boards if you can fit them in your car. You are creating a "set" and the more dramatic the better! :o
Have you considered using something like 3” PVC pipes for the fence posts? You could use rebar pounded into the ground to provide support. Making the posts out of wood is going to make them quite heavy and if you make them out of foam board I think you will need to spend a serious amount of labor making them look real. PVC pipe just needs some paint.
